Deuce.....I bought one for the rear of my '40. It had the FORD script and was told that it came from the cheaper priced model Ford at the time. The higher priced Ford's did not come with the script. That's all I know except it does look good !

This 1941 Ford Fordor Sedan was imported from South africa into Australia a few years ago. It appears that the original Tail Lights have been replaced with units from a Volkswagen or similar. However, this car has the more fancy Bumpers, and if you look closely, you can see that the rear bumper has the Ford Script. This is the only 1941 Ford Fordor Sedan that I know of. There may be others, but I am not aware of any. They are rare over here.

This 1941 Ford Fordor Sedan was spotted back in the Sixties. Note the Ford script in the rear Bumper. This was the only 1941 Ford Sedan that I can recall seeing, even back then when this era of cars were in common use. 1941 Fords are just about non existent in Australia. There are a few Utes, that were made from Sedans for military use, plus a couple of Woodys that were used in World War II. In recent years, a few Tudor Sedans and Coupes have been imported.

This is how the 1941 Ford Sedan in the above pictures finished up. These photos were taken in 1989 when the Wrecking Yard was closing down, as the land had been purchased for a housing estate. The Scrappies had a field day at this yard which was full of cars from the thirties to the sixties.

Both the South African and the Australian 1941 Fords pictured above which have the Script in the rear bumpers would have been sourced from Ford of Canada. On that basis, could it be that only the Canadian 1941 Fords had the Script in these upmarket bumpers? I am not sure whether the above cars are Deluxe or Super Deluxe models, though both have the upmarket bumpers which were only available on the Super Deluxe models? A smooth bumper was the standard issue on the Deluxe models.

Seeing what happened to that 41 is sad, so much more so seeing what it was.

I see that cream 41 has 46 stainless trim on the boot lid (trunk)

The front bumper gets a license plate,
no script.

My 41 has script rear and license plate center mounted front.

Only 41 woodies came with no script front and rear, all others get ONE script bumper.

41 Super Deluxe front bumper locates the license plate to center mount
onto the bumper itself. Holes were factory punched for super deluxe front
bumper license plate brackets and hardware.

41 Deluxe front bumper locates license plate bracket off of the passenger side bumper arm more or less covering part of the passenger grille insert.

It was common to see 41 super deluxe with incorrect 41 deluxe
non-ribbed) bumper after accident/replacement.

It was also common to see Super Deluxe front bumpers missing license
plate hardware and trim.

jmho.

On certain woody and wagons, the rear bumper was also void of script irregardless of deluxe
or super deluxe.

The tailgate of woody wagons usually would accommodate the spare tire.
in which case, the bumper was clearanced in the center top to allow for the tailgate
with tire to lower/open without damage or interference to tire/rim/trim rings etc.

I have also seen wagons with spare tire mounted inside rear of wagon/compartment
-possibly to deter theft, but I can't recall whether this was on 41's or later 42-48 wagons/woodies. Certainly in later models, the choice was optional.

Just for the sake of completeness, A guy hould probably also mention the
very rare painted (no chrome) bumpers both front and rear.

Black out bumpers were available as both ribbed (super deluxe) and non-ribbed for WWll, whatever was handy was put into war production.

Interestingly enough, there were more than a few 'black out' 41 Fords driving around Canada during and after the war.

I seem to remember having a bunch of steel - drab painted trim mixed in with a train load of 40 and 41-48 ford parts many years ago.
I don't recall whether it was stainless and painted over trim or just painted steel...

I am still kicking myself for selling nice 40 Ford hoods and fenders for $75.

Here's a 41 Special (or possibly Deluxe) staff car after pearl harbor with it's non ribbed bumpers..

...those are some Interesting wire cutters, two cutting faces......

It looks like they used Ford truck tail lights? on the front fenders of 41
black out cars...

This looks like it was probably the 'good' side judging by the exit wounds?

I think this would be early 41 production judging by the 3 piece front fenders.

I'll bet you 'the boys' had it back up and running within a day or so of dragging it to the maintenance tent.

Here is a 1942 Ford blackout model. You will notice that it also has the same kind of Tail Lights as the 1941 Ford Blackout model. I believe that hey used these "different" Tail Lights, as they could be "blacked out" more effectively. Also note that this 1942 Ford has the same "Profile" as the 1941 Ford Super Deluxe Models, however, I am led to believe that they are not interchangeable, as the Bolt Holes are in slightly different locations? These 1941 Ford type bumpers were only fitted to the base level cars. It is hard to see, but the rear bumper is also Ford script.

I've seen this on a few 41's as well, I'm not so sure that calling it a '46' trim is correct.... That being said, Production could have been different here in Canada as there was lots of variation for such a short model run.

I have also seen variations with a larger stainless trim with the Ford script above the trunk handle which leads me to believe that the rear license plate was relocated to a bracket possibly off of the drivers bumper arms. This was quiet a few years ago and the old memory is low on definition.
Mind you, that could have been some ones custom job using a 50ish Ford/Monarch trunk trim...
Who knows..

Yes, the 42-48 bumpers are different.

Also, regarding those '41 tail lights..
They are really nothing more than
a removal of the actual bezel/surround and placing a can in it's place.
The tail light bucket (the part that mounts to and behind the fender) is still there, they just removed the outer housing and modified a "tuna can" to bolt to the existing bucket. I think they even reused the rubber tail light to fender gasket but they ate the tuna first..
Not sure about 42...

This 1942 Ford Deluxe has the 1941 Ford Super Deluxe "lookalike" Bumpers.
When I asked this question on Ford Barn last year, I received this reply from Barner Brian:- A stock 41 Ford Super Deluxe bumper has the two holes for the license plate mounting bracket and the factory bolt holes are 15 3/4" approximately apart center to center.
The 42 Deluxe bumper does not have the two license plate mount holes and the factory bolt holes are 13 1/16" apart approximately center to center.
Ford apparently used the 41 bumper core and simply re-stamped the holes to provide for the different grille arrangement in 1942. Simply put they spread the bumper guards wider off center on the 42 application.
Now, I went back last night and looked at the blue 42 Ford you have pictured an did has the license mounting bracket so it could be a correct 41 Super Deluxe bumper but if that is the case I don't know what bumper irons may have been used.
I hope I have not confused you. If you are looking at bumper core for 1942 Deluxe you need the measurements and the understanding it did not have the two holes for the license plate mounting bracket.
While they look the same, the Bumpers will not interchange between the 41 & 42 Fords.
To sum up, while they look identical, they are different.

Graeme from New Zealand. Regarding that original 1941 Ford, the chrome on the fenders and trunk lid have been added by the owner. Notice that the Strip on the front fender is short? Also note the 3 "hash" strips on the front fender. The chrome strips on the trunk lid might look similar to those fitted to 1946 and 1948 Fords, but if you compare them with the strips on this Australian 1948 Ford Super Deluxe, you will see that they are longer than the original ones.
Now before the purists tell me that this car is not a 1948 model, please note that this is how Ford Australia equipped these 1948 Fords. The Australian 1948 Fords never received the modified rear Bumper and restyled Bumper Guards. Nor was the Bumper repositioned lower like they were in USA and Canada.
Also, for some strange reason, the same 1946 style trim was used on the trunk lids, which did not match the trim on the rest of the car. All very strange, but this car is correct for the 1948 Australian Fords.
The reason for adding this car to this Post is so that you can compare the chrome strips on the trunk lid with those on the 1941 Ford.
For safety reasons, Ford did round the bottom corners of the trunk lids, so that you didn't poke your eye out if you happened to walk into one with the trunk lid open. That was one very good idea that the USA didn't think of?

Mercman,

There's something fishy about the blue '42

There are no bumperettes or 3 5/16 long bolts (to attach bumperettes)
listed for rear of 1942 when used with ribbed bumper.

All in all, ribbed bumpers for 42 are very rare...
I wonder if Ford was using up the last of the '41 bumpers during the
early production of '42?
A search for pics of '42 Ford reveals very few cars with ribbed bumpers
but many cars with plain bumpers.

Compare 1941 rear ribbed (has guards/bumperettes) and 1942 rear ribbed:

Part#'s 11A-17996B and 11A-17908 respectively (1941 parts/numbers).

1942 rear ribbed bumper -no 3 5/16" bolts, no guards.
*this is the only listing for ribbed rear bumper for 1942 passenger.
Irregardless of Deluxe - Super Deluxe or Special.

And as you mentioned, bumper mount/holes were repositioned for '42
which also forces a change of bumper arms which are more than likely
lengthened and/or re-arched to accommodate for wider hole spacing.

It appears that 1942 non ribbed bumper can be optioned with guards
depending on model.

Rear guards/holes are closely spaced requiring yet another style of bumper arms.

Perhaps a prior owner of the blue '42 customize/modification
sometime within the last 74 years?

Or ??

Canada didn't get it either,
This makes your tailpan unique.
At least North American market has/had 41-48 tailpans available aftermarket at one time.
Fairlane was the company I purchased my fiberglass tailpan from..

Fibber, I think it was easier for Ford to use the directional Truck tail light pods rather than to try and hide or redirect the light coming from '41s
large/bright fender top lights.
Part of every vehicles 'black out' package were lights that didn't shine up and/or couldn't be seen by enemy aircraft.

Due to the curvature of the fender, They probably moved the pod as far forward as possible to keep the pod from pointing to the sky.

How's Molly doin?

That makes sense, I didn't think about them being different for the war and Molly is doing fine but Teenie won't leave me alone.

moefuz, it was the '38 and '39 Ford Wagons that had the spare tire mounted on the front seat just behind the driver. Also correct that the station wagon rear bumper had no "script". The rear bumper on the wagon had the center section depressed, to clear the tailgate mounted spare when it was opened. From 1940 thru 1948 the spare was tailgate mounted, not an option to mount it inside the car.

39topless, you are 100% correct. The owner of this yard when it was operating was a Studebaker man, and the yard was full of Studebakers. Unfortunately, the majority of the Studebakers finished up as scrap metal along with most of the rest of the cars. In the end, even cars that looked good were full of rust. I remember hearing of a guy who bought a 54 Ford Customline from the closing down auction, only for it to break in half when he was trying to load it onto his trailer. High humidity is the major cause of rust in this area.
