It has been stated many times to NEVER try and start an engine without some idea of its condition. The old straight weight oils were just sludge hungry forming fluids back in the day. As the video showed, why try and run an engine with a mess like that resting in the pan. A good and thorough cleaning will avoid many of the pitfalls and maybe the cost of a rebuild if caught early. I applaud this man taking his friends advice.

If the oil pan looks like that, don't forget the valve chamber and the drip tubes to the main bearings. They are probably just as bad from my experience.

Yup!

And then, after you clean out the pan and the valve chamber and put it all back together, pour a quart of your refill oil slowly down the distributor hole in the head. It will refill the valve chamber and the dip tray in the oil pan so that when you start up, everything is getting oil.

I'd be very hesitant about adding any kind of solvent to the engine to remove the sludge. It might be better to flush out the engine with oil and run it for a while, then change the oil a few times until it looks clear.

Mine was the same.....pulled the pan cleaned ...and a pump rebuild cant go wrong

that is what good old fashioned non detergent oil is good for, if you like cleaning that stuff out of your engine refill the engine with non detergent, there will be guys come on here and say never use detergent oil because it will melt your engine, seriously, they are using an 80 old maintance manual which most of the lube part should be thrown in the trash, ford used that oil because that was all that was available, you see what it does, you probably spent a day cleaning that sludge out of your engine, ive seen oil that was run with water in the engine that looked like that, retorque head before starting engine and a few more times after driving the car a little bit

Would have been interesting to measure how much liquid oil (lets say less than 20/50) vs sludge remained. Looks like at least half was now sludge, which would be like running an engine on 2.5 quarts of useable oil....
