Default Valve Cover has Extra TUbe

The valve cover on our 1930 car has an extra tube that looks like it might be an additional oil return tube. Has anyone seen this before or know what it is?

Looks like someone added the tube to supply more oil to the valve chamber. Don't understand why because all the output of the oil pump goes to the valve chamber to begin with. The only thing that tube does is redirect the oil to the rear of the valve chamber.

The engine that came with my pickup had a tapped hole in the valve cover in that exact location, but it just had a plug in it. Never knew just what it was for. It does seem strange that it would be taking freshly pumped oil and dumping it in the rear of the valve chamber.

looks like they are supplying the back of the valve chamber so it gets oil sooner than the way it is designed
which i don't think is a bad thing because the way the oiling system is designed the oil flows forward and floods the chamber before the rear bearings get oil

It could have been a oil filter return line, from the old days.

I wonder if there might be a distribution tube on the inside, spraying oil onto the valve stems/lifters, or into the other 2 wells?

The valve cover on my '30 engine has the plug shown in the photo. Looks like it could be 1/8" NPT.

Now I would like to see the inside of the cover and the chamber itself to see if they blocked off the original oil feed.

I bought a combine engine back 51 years ago to use in a car that had an oil filter that was connected in the same places. An old mechanic told me to get rid of it that it was trouble looking for a place to happen. So I took it off.

It could also be a conversion to mains pressure oiling.
That is the take-off point for any conversion to mains pressure.
It's what happens inside the valve chamber that will explain the modification?

That tube short circuits the oil output of the pump. It does fill the rear oil dams before the front ones.

Until the cover is pulled we don't really know what that line is for.

I pulled the cover today. There's nothing on the other side.
