Question fog lights

I have not heard back from Marvin about the photo he had showing the bracket to support the fog lights on a 47 coupe. Does anyone else have any input on the bracket or support needed? I'm sure alot of these must have been added by owners. It seems like there should be something to stop the apron from cracking. Moe

Mine hasn't cracked so far, but it does wobble. I was just thinking about making some brackets for that a few days ago. I'll post some pics as I go, if no one else posts them before me.

Just my 2 cents worth but I think you need to go through the apron and attach to the bumper bracket. I will post a picture of my unity fog lights that have many different ways to mount them in their kit. I realize this is not a 47 but might give you some ideas. Hope it helps.

I used to have a set of fog lights on my '46 but have since removed them during restoration. There was a pressed steel "L" bracket with a back up plate attached to a bumper arm with the top of the "L" just under the fog light mount. The "L" and back up were attached together with bolts sandwiching the bumper arm so there were no holes thru the arm. The fog light bolted thru the apron and "L" bracket. This was a Ford accessory not an aftermarket. Don't know how Unity aftermarket lights were attached. I no longer have the lights so I can't post pictures. Hope this helps.

Hi 1oldtimer, I would really appreicate any pics or drawing of any kind that you can send me.
31 chevy, I also think that they should mount thru the apron with a bracket.
Gary in Louisianna, Could you possibly send me a sketch of how the bracket and bumper arms were mounted and/or how to get one of the orginal brackets. I just want to do this once the right way. Thanks all Coolcoupe

It's been over 20 years ago that I removed the lights but this is what I remember. The "L" bracket was a stamped piece that had a small 90 degree lip around the entire edge to provide stiffness. Don't remember the backing plate having this lip. It was held in position on the bumper arm with 2 bolts & nuts. Probably # 12 stove bolts. They went thru both pieces just above and just below the arm edges. Not much room between the top of the arm and the bottom of the apron. The metal was probably about 1/16 inch thick, don't really know for sure. The "L" bracket was 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 inch wide.
Can't say for certain this was a Ford kit but it definitely was made for this installation and was manufacured not home made. The lights were Ford block letter stamped at the top of the housing.
Hope this helps.

the pair I had for my 46 had a bracket that was curved to match the bumper and fit between the bracket and the bumper, and curved around the splash apron --no modifications, they are unity with a "FORD" crest

interesting, I've never seen the brackets. I'm looking now, but most likely I'll have to make my own......btw my fog lights have the "FORD" stamped in the top too.

Hi Curt, are you saying there would be no need to drill a hole thru the apron pan, if so that sound like a better way! Thanks Coolcoupe

I'm the process of making some now, but it looks as if a simple L bracket is the key. Attach it to the stud for the fog light and drill a hole in the bumper bracket and attach there. Other then sizing (I have a rough 2"x2"x1" wide bracket now), I might have to contour it to match the bumper bracket but that's it. I don't have anything to stamp it out (still looking for a good old press) I'm going with 1/8" thick metal (either stainless painted or steel whichever I have around).

I finally found my lights, the fancy brackets are on Unity lights with a ford crest,-- they fit between the bumper and the bracket, the light with the "L" bracket just has block letters "FORD" and needs a hole in the splash shield
