Default Light Switch/ Steering Wheel

Hi, when I turn the steering wheel the light switch moves with it just enough to blink the lights. Is there an easy fix? Thanks a lot

There could be several reasons for this, acting separately or in conjunction. If the tube that is in the steering column is bent or has a lot of dirt (foreign material) it could be dragged along with the steering shaft. The detents in switch itself could be worn causing the switch to move when the wheel is turned.

First start by removing the switch and examining the detents. You can add some electrical grease there to help the switch to turn but if the tube is dragging that will make the problem worse. If the detents are worn the switch will have to be replaced.

The second thing to do is to remove the tube that has the horn wire from the steering column. You will need to compress the spring at the bottom and remove the circlip. It helps to use some kind of lever to compress the spring and some tape on the switch lever at the steering wheel so that it does not move. If you have an open car you can then pull out the tube. If it is a closed car you will have to remove the bolts and the bracket holding the steering column in place so that it can be tilted down to make room for the tube to be removed. If you have a coupe you may have to remove the steering system to get the tube out.

If the tube is bend, gently straighten it out. Clean it and apply some lubricant such as a light grease or oil. Assemble everything. You can compress the spring in a vice and loop a strong string around it 4 times to keep it compressed. That makes reassembly easier.

If you are having difficulty removing the tube with the horn wire, you can try using some spray lubricant on the tube after pulling it out slightly. Spray and turn and move it up and down until it moves freely.

Ensure you have the bushing installed on light switch rod also.
