Want Help Organizing Zip Code Information
I am interested in being able to determine some information that will result in being able to take one zip code (A National Meet for instance) and review the zip codes shown on the registration forms to determine the distance a determined percentage of the attendees were willing to travel.
When I was in stock car racing and seeking sponsorship, NASCAR had some demographics that shown for a particular event 80% of the attendees travel from within a 250 mile radius. I want to be able to determine this information for some of the past national and regional events in an effort to determine the distance at which certain events in a specified time frame might be liable to detract from each other. I would think this is not a difficult piece of information to determine, but I do not have the skills nor the hardware at this time to achieve this. Can anyone suggest to me a piece of affordable software that I might acquire or guide me in same manner to some one that might be of assistance? Thanks in advance for any offer of assistance.

The above, and most calculators I found are the distance as the crow flies, not driving distsnce, but you could probably come up with an average adder that would be close. I would add 20%

Yep, the example on their page shows 888.4 mile while mapping the same shows 1,180 or 1,254 depending on route. The difference is substantial!

Not for nothing, but if ya add 20% to every calculation don't they all come out in the same order anyway?

I just wrote a Linux shell script that will do what you want to do. It takes the list of Zip codes and looks up the driving distances on Google. It then makes a list of distances from every zip code. If you send me a list of zip codes I can send you back a list of distance. If you happen to have a computer running the Linux operating system I can send you the code. Bob |

Anchorage to Seattle -- by air = 1,488 miles
To drive it = 2,546 (I've done both!)

Jim is practically my neighbor, and my chief mentor! He occasionally gets to work on Lilly (his '29 Tudor) when he's not working on Boyd's, Larry's, Rich's, Bob's, Lee's, (add about 10 more names) or my vehicle. Great guy!
