Roadster deck lid question
Hey guys, I have an original 1928 roadster I am building but the guy I got it from didn't have the deck lid, I am looking for a deck lid and was wondering what the difference between the years are. Will a 30-31 fit or do I need to find 28-29? The car will not be a show stopper car or winning any trophies by no means so it doesn't have to be an original 28. Any help would've great. Thanks, Shaun

Re: Roadster deck lid question
Yes the 30-31 will work.
You will have to relocate the rumble lid latch catch on the gutter. I believe there is a service bulletin about this too. If you have a trunk lid then no changes needed. All you need to know here: http://home.comcast.net/~68c/Rumblelid.htm |

Re: Roadster deck lid question
Another thing, does it need to be a "roadster" deck lid? Will a coupe work? How about trunk vs rumble? Thanks again, Shaun

Re: Roadster deck lid question
The deck lids are the same ,the hinges and latches are the same for the trunk option. The hinges for the rumble are the same but the latches are different from what I understand. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will straighten me out.

Re: Roadster deck lid question
All rumble lid outer skins are the same.
The inner structure varies for 28/29- 30/31, the D nuts for the rumble hinges and cut outs for the rumble vs trunk latch. All the other metal for the quarters and upper panel different between the body styles. The lower panels vary based on year and body type. |

Re: Roadster deck lid question
the lid seems to be about an inch too long where it meets up to the top panel behind the seat and its a real tight fit on the sides...

Re: Roadster deck lid question
Are you sure your lower panel is correct?

Re: Roadster deck lid question
That lower panel looks a little beat up!! Does the front of the lid drop down where it belongs if you pull the lid back? Maybe that lower panel is thowing you off.

Re: Roadster deck lid question
9.5" is the correct height for the panel below the lid. The inner panels and brackets, etc. are different, depending on whether for a rumble lid or trunk. Likely best if you can post some pictures to determine exactly what all you have.
I have a 1930-31 lid on my '28 roadster, and the only change required was to relocate the rumble latch striker plate, from the front edge of the rain gutter to the rear edge. |

Re: Roadster deck lid question
I went out and measured mine. Panel below lid, 9 3/8 inch high. Trunk/rumble lid, A little short of 31 inches. The panel above the lid, 10 1/4 inch from edge to base of trim bead. I was going to take a picture but the battery was dead. Otherwise, looks like yours. Mine is a rumble seat. The lid fits in pretty tight top and bottom, the width has 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap.
Width of the top of the lid is 36 1/2 inches. Bottom is 35 1/2 inches wide. These are rough measurements because my stuff has had a tough life and they are not the straightest. Last edited by Neal; 12-17-2013 at 09:18 PM. Reason: did some more measuring |
