Columbia
Is a Columbia rear axle from a 1946 Ford different from one that would have been installed in a 1936 Ford?
Thanks, John |

Re: Columbia
The 46 would have slightly stronger clutch and gear set. The length of the axle housing, the connection for the rear radius rods, the spring perch and the 46 columbia axle housing has a vent. But with work the housing can be shortened and the radius rod connection and the spring perch changed. plus you use the 36 axles and you have a very close appearing 36 Columbia. Of course the shifting valves are 100% different but the 35-36 Columbia shifting valves can be bought off the shelf new. The change you question is OFTEN done!

Re: Columbia
As stated by Terry,OH the '36 & '46 Columbia's differ in several areas, however, to put a '46 under a '36 does not require the modifications that were stated.
Yes the '46-48 axle tract is 2" wider and the radius bars are different, so is the torque tube. However, the added 2" is not a problem.37-38 radius bars solve that problem and a '36 torque tube and center section will bolt right into the '46-48 Columbia. I have '39 drums and '36 wheels on my '36, the added axle length is very hard t spot, never have had anyone make a comment ..

Re: Columbia
I have attached a couple of pix showing the '46-48 Columbia under my '36.. You should note that I utilized the '47-48 tube shock mounts and sway bar..

Re: Columbia
No, the 39 Zephyr utilizes a Hypoid type ring and pinion. However the Coulmbia unit, axles & axle housings will work in the 39 Ford using a Ford center section and gears. The Ford and the Lincoln are the same widths. The only thing you will need to address is the eye for the spring shackle studs. The Lincoln is much larger but a bushing can be made to use the Ford spring stud.
