Default Upholstery

This is just a note to amateur upholsterers like me. The attached photo shows the vinyl at the bottom of my door. The vinyl has swelled in a radiating manner from each panel clip. I have concluded that it is the chemical outgassing of the rust proofing I liberally brushed on the inner door panel. I am not going to say whose rust proofing I used because I can’t remember.

Just curious. What are the door panels made of?

I suspect that the material used for the panel board may not have been correct. If there was no water barrier (plastic sheeting) behind the paneling water got into the cardboard and separated the vinyl from the glue.

I think the off gassing of the rust proofing is certainly probable. I wonder if you could pull off the door panel and and let it bake in the sun to drive off any absorbed solvents/vehicles from the rust proof and maybe return it to its former shape. If so, and even if you replace the vinyl, a barrier material such as foil placed behind the panel may prevent a re-occurrence. Polyethylene sheet would most likely be too permeable to be effective so I would avoid that.
