Default Wheels

I have a problem with my wheels that I have not seen on the Barn. My lug nut holes are to big from years of use. I have the thicker SS washers but still need to grind them down so they do not protrude beyond the rim. I have also bought SS lug nuts that are used on boat trailers. They have a much wider contact surface than the model A nuts but I still have to grind them down, The July-August issue of the MODEL A NEWS has a great article

on repairing rims but does not address the lug nut holes. Wheels are good other wise. Is there any fix for this problem? Or is there anyone out there that has good wheels they would like to sell? Thanks in advance Bob

I use the washers/spacers that oldwoodsman suggested. They help with woggled out holes and also they don't chip the paint on the wheels.

if the holes in your wheels are so bad that the washers will not tighten up. throw the wheels away. life is to short as it is.

I have several sets of those washers on the 12 wheels I have on the ground. Most of them are useless because they have split. Quality very poor.

Model A wheels are unique in that the lug nuts and studs actually carry the weight of the car.
Unlike other cars where the lug nuts only hold the wheels on and the weight of the car is carried by a close fit with the center of the wheel to the drums.
Your lug nuts may actually be tightening against the drums and not the wheels.

Wow AL, I did not know that. I guess it should have been obvious. That enplanes why the lug nut holes ware on a model A and not on modern cars.

A good fab shop can weld up those wheels and machine in the new holes. Common practice on old tractor wheels.
