Default How to install rear brake camshaft pins

I read somewhere but cannot seem to find weather the rear service brake camshaft pins are to be installed cherry red hot or cold. Any tip? Should a cold hammered pin attach just as well? What is recommended?

You've go to got the pin cherry red with a torch and then peen it over quickly. I find it it's easier with two people - one to heat and one to do the hammer work.

I think you could do it either way - cold or hot. If you use a torch and have painted some of the backing plate parts, the heat would mess up the paint. I installed mine cold with a ball peen hammer and it worked pretty well. If you are planning to paint the whole assembly, heat would work fine.

Thks for the reply. Since already painted, going to try cold with 4lbs hammer. Couple of blows on one side then turn handle over and couple blows on other side. Will judge success by scientific eyeballing to see if pin deformed. ..

I have done many and I always do them cold. peen them over with a ball pien and then the flat. Easy to do. I don't want to mess up the paint either, plus, it is an easy one person job.

I have never done them hot. Always cold. With some practice they look like originals.
