1971 F250 Power Steering
I have a 1971 F250 with manual steering. I also have the power steering box. column and steering wheel, pump and hoses from a mid 1980's pickup.
How can I determine if they will work in the 71 without taking it apart? Does anyone have a parts number list? Thanks |

Re: 1971 F250 Power Steering
Power Steering was available as a factory option in '71, so you might be able to compare parts with what was stock in '71 to what you have now. The pump (& brackets, pulleys) would depend on the engine you have vs the engine on the donor vehicle. Seems like I had to get different brackets when I put a 460 in my '71 F100

Re: 1971 F250 Power Steering
I have a 360 in my 71 and I think the donor was a 302. I can make the brackets if I have to but am concerned with the box and steering column. I understand the lengths might be different.
The steering wheel is the same. |

Powersteering pumps is flow and pressure regulated.
So you can adjust them to whatever you need. Flow is restricted by a plunge with a hole in it bigger hole higher flow. For the mudtrucks we drill them out big Just find out what you steering box needs and set the max pressure first. Then you can experiment with flow. To high flow and it gets nervous. |

You need to go with something no later than 1979. Best to get everything you need from the donor truck. I scrapped a '72 and the PS is going in a '69, even the '72 column (original '69 wheel fits)

Re: 1971 F250 Power Steering
I've done several with proper vintage parts, and even then Ford had some different columns and lengths during the 67-72 run. I'm not too sure you can easily use the 73-79 column in a 71. Maybe you should take a stroll through Fordification site. Keith has amassed a wealth of info on the 67-72 trucks.

I second the Fordification.com recommendation.
