Default Model T Coil Substitution

I was told that it may be possible to use standard ignition coils in place of the Model T coils with some circuitry. The model T coils are getting expensive and hard to come by.

Does anyone know if this can be done and possibly have some info.

Thanks

hello
I do not know about a standard coil or how that works but over 10 years ago I put a true fire electronic system in my 1923 and have never had any problems with it. and know one will know you have it because it takes the place if the coils and rotor. if at a show the judge will never know its there. web site is true-fire.com they run about 350.00 but I have never adj it or messed with it. one time I took the timer off to look at just to see but didn't need to. I love it

It's kind of like adopting a weed whacker engine to power your washing machine. Sure there is probably a way to do it, but why bother? You can buy good Model T coils and have them shipped to your house by USPS. You will have the problem solved for your lifetime.

I thought about this myself some years back and it's probably possible to do. But, as far as I know, haunting all 3 sites for many years, no one has ever said they did it. As Royce said they may not be falling out of the sky but their available and easily repairable with a bit of knowledge. I've turned up quite a few at flea markets in my area and usually the seller doesn't know what the heck it is. $5/6 each is about all this cheap skate will shell out for one. Picked up 2 brass tops last month for $10.

There are several guys that rebuild Model T coils. On ebay there are lot's of coils for sale. I would be looking at the ones that sell them in lot's, that would give you the best price break on postage. 5-10$ each for standard coils is about the going rate.
If you have some coils now a good preliminary test is to check for open winding's. Check the the two terminals on the side, should have a reading somewhere between 3200 and 3800 ish oms resistance. If they can pass that test then chances are they will be good to rebuild. If you do send some out for rebuild I would suggest sending 5 or 6 so you have 1 or 2 spares.

What condition is your magneto in? If it's not working I would suggest just connecting that modern coil to a distributor and go hve fun with your T.

True statement. However, they are not usable until someone rebuilds them with proper capacitors and sets them on a hand cranked coil tester. Read more here:

Sorry about the advise. I am a Model A guy so had better stay out of the Model T business. I just happened to get the MAC's catalog because I was looking at a C cab T truck awhile back and wanted to see the parts availability of T parts. Also had a T back in High School and thought it might be a thing to do. But the boss (wife) said that the last Model A I purchased was the birthday present for the rest of my life so guess now I know where I stand.
