Default Stacking Brake Drums A Problem?

I have my best brake drums packed tight in a cabinet. A mechanic friend tells me that stacking will warp those drums. What kind of trouble is that? Fred A

Wow Fred, good question! I'm gonna get the popcorn, 'cuz this one might turn-out to be as controversial as storing crankshafts laying flat on the ground. DD

Stacking a few drums flat should cause no problems, at least I've never seen any. Just use thin wood or thick cardboard between each drum.
I would not, however, stack or store drums on end, because of possible distortion.

If the drums are loaded below the yield strength of the material, they will return to their original shape (elastic deformation). Loading beyond the yield strength (on the stress/strain curve) of the material will result in plastic deformation and they won't return to their original shape.

I have thousands of N.O.S. Brake Drums -- (from the 30s through the 70s -- Ford, GM, Chrysler, more -- HUBS & DRUMS).....
Absolutely no issues if stored FLAT....
Don't store ON EDGE.... that's all....

After laying the drums on a flat surface, use several crankshafts piled on top to hold them flat. Occasionally rotate the crankshafts to keep the cranks from warping.

Hi Everyone. Now that's the kind of priceless information we're able to occasionally learn here on the FordBarn!

Crankshafts need to be stood on end on top of the drums, perfectly plumb.

Putting it to the test may be to use a brake lathe and give them a spin. Most of the drums that I have so stored are already turned and any deformation would be then obvious. Not now convenient to do that test. I'll come back and report if anything is seen. Thanks: Fred A
