Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
I‘m going to do a 1500 mile plus trip through Germany, Belgium, France and Great Britain with my F1. I‘m thinking about what kind of spare parts should I carry with me in case of a breakdown. I have a 239 french block with dual carbs and a Bubba distributor.
My current list includes: Head gaskets Fuel pump Fan belt Spark plugs Blubs Throttle cable Fuel line Engine oil Transmission oil Differential oil Anything else that I should carry with me? |

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
You should be able to get all oils, bulbs, fan belt, spark plugs, fuel line/filter, electric fuel pump, hoses, in those countries, so you shouldn't need to drag those along. Good tools should be carried. A thorough inspection will usually keep you from breaking down. Take pleanty of money for gasoline!

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
Depending on type of ignition, I'd have a spare set of points, a condenser, cap and rotor. You might also think about radiator hoses and a set of hose clamps (multiple sizes). Brake fluid as well. Also, rags, jack stands, good jack, something to lay on (like a sheet of cardboard) and a really good LED flashlight - one that can stand up on its own and be directed (think working under the car at night on the side of the road!).

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
Instead of carrying ignition parts, carry a spare distributor already set up. Same with the spare fuel pump. But as stated, you are only going 1500 miles, shouldn't have to worry about much if the car was put together correctly. Make sure your spare is inflated.

Mike mentions a spare tire and I didn't not see it on your list. Definitely a necessary item.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
I am a firm believer of preventative maintenance. If the vehicle in question is in good shape, well maintained, the only parts I would consider would be a good spare tire, one that is equal to the tires on the ground. A spare generator, and fan belt, extra fuel pump and/or an electric pump plumbed and wired into the system.
I have driven my '36 Ford coupe w/59 AB engine over 94 K miles in the 71 years I have owned it, I have driven twice between Southern California and Eastern Idaho, a distance of 2,100 miles round trip, which was done none stop, seventeen hours each way, never a problem.. The only problem I have ever had with my Ford is a failed fuel pump, which I eliminated by installing an electric fuel pump.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
I carry a distributor that has been all set up and test driven. Minus the cap - but also carry a spare cap.
I can't believe everybody forgot one of the most common problems on a long trip. = Fuel filter. |

No matter where in the world you travel, don't leave home without your Early Ford V8 Club Roster. You've got friends.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
Check with each country to see what they require you to have in order to travel through them. A tire pump, tire patches, extra tire tube. A laptop to take with you.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
One very simple thing, is a large plastic garbage bag. If you have a flat or need to get under your car, a garbage bag on the ground is a lot nicer than a dirty road.

Maybe a starter? Sounds like a wonderful trip. Will you post pictures. I am fourth generation away from Germany. Have never been there.

Ass't nuts and bolts, mechanics wire, elect. tape, length of wire as long as the vehicle, spare fuel filter, wire ties, fuses if used. Check truck over and think,"what could go wrong" , it probably will!

You might need a trailer to haul all these spare items. There are shops that repair machinery if you haven't packed enough.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
An assortment of fuses should be standard equipment in any glove box.
One of the most valuable emergency items to carry is a bar of Ivory Soap in a baggy. Ivory Soap will stop a leak in a fuel tank in a heart beat, semi perminate if it does not get wet from road splash.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
I routinely take 4 to 5000 mile trips in my old pre 50's rides . The only thing that has ever been taken along other then a good set of tools is what you can't get in a auto parts store of today. Anything six volt(regulator and tail headlight bulb) and the head gasket) Like it has been said already a vehicle in good working order is a joy to travel in. I drove a 51 F1 on a 7000 mile trip here in the states with a friend a few years back with no issues , one of my many fond memories. Tim

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
On the drive to Pendine I needed split pins, grease, axle oil in a suitable bottle and spout and a 3/8 socket to undo the axle fill plug.
We used lots of cable ties, and quite a bit of water/coolant. A can with fuel can be useful too. One thing we needed but didn't have was a multimeter which would have been handy for the backup car. What is normally pretty handy is a small 1/4 drive socket set which has an assortment of sockets, screwdriver tips, hex drivers and torx drivers. Really very useful and saves having to carry multiple tools. |

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
I have owned and driven my model A for 55 years and the only repairs on the side of the road I have ever had to make was a fan belt in the Mohave desert, a condenser in the Oregon Cascade mountains, and headlight bulbs burning out at Big Bear lake due to a bad ground. I carried a spare fan belt and water bag in the desert, and bought a Volkswagen condenser to get me going in Oregon. In Big Bear I had to wait for morning. I have had a few flat tires but always carry a spare since the car looks naked without one. Now I better knock on wood!

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
Mart picked a real good one, a multimeter.
Of course some lengths of wire goes with it. I like a good heavy pair with really large alligator clamps that can go from front to rear of the vehicle.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
I carry one of everything that I can (It's a good thing that the '51 has a big trunk). The theory is that if you have something, you won't need it. It's worked perfectly for the last 35 years.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
I used to follow just the opposite thought and didn't carry a tool box, just a screwdriver and adjustable wrench, plus a crank/lugwrench. I thought the car would sense my distrust and balk. Now I'm old, I also take the original tool kit as supplied when new minus the grease gun.

If you're travelling with other people a towrope and pair of jumper cables can be handy. if not for you for someone else.

Re: Nessary spare parts for 1500 miles trip
Can I suggest adding a pair of known good thermostats to the list? I had one fail recently which lead to all sorts of problems out on the road.
One of those digital laser temperature guns would have been useful in my case too. |

Rumbleseat used to have numbered boxes on his bench with larger items like starters and so on. If he needed something he would call his wife and have her send "Box number 7".

A cell phone keeps you connected.
I'll add an extra Dizzy. I'm also assuming you have a spare tire. 1/2" and a 9/16" wrenches I hope you post the adventure along the way here. It would be nice to see. Best of luck!!! |
