Default Electronic distributor condenser?

Hey Guys,

I have a 1933 with Mallory dual point electronic distributor. I’ve removed the distributor from the front of the engine so that I could get at the condenser attached to the side. I was disappointed to find no numbers on the condenser and although I found the distributor for sale, there was no option to buy a replacement condenser.
The Mallory distributor is 2572101.

"Mallory dual point electronic distributor" is an oxymoron. The "electronic" nomenclature comes from the electronic gizmo that replaces the points. In some cases, people use a set of points to trigger an electronic ignition box, such as a MSD 6A. Being strictly a "points and condenser" guy, this sort of thing is above my pay grade.

Can you maybe post a picture of your distributor so we can determine what you really have?

EDIT : A quick Google search shows that number be a conventional dual point distributor. You will need a condenser for it.

Here's a picture of a couple of mine on a Harmon and Collins dual coil setup for an early flathead :

Mallory does have their "Unilite" electronic version of that distributor. Outward appearance is the same. But as Tubman said, that number is the points version, and needs a condenser.

I believe any condenser will work. I think they all function the same. 6 volt/12volt the same. Take the condenser to your local store to get any new one that has lead-in wire long enough to mount on your distributor.

I looked at the Google results some more and now I'm really confused. Jeg's lists that part number as a dual point distributor, while Speedway lists it as a "Mallory 2572101 Unilite Electronic Ignition Distributor 3 Bolt Dual Point Heavy Duty Points Unilite Electronic Ignition Distributor". (Yep, that's a "cut 'n paste" right out of their online listing.) I know nothing about Unilites except that most people in the know don't like 'em.

Can anyone help us out?

I agree. There are different capacitances available, but that is more dependent on the coil than anything else. The wrong capacitance will slightly effect point wear, but they will run if good.

Thanks Guys,
I think I may have just the condenser in my garage. Now if I could only remember where it is..
I think a trip to the parts house may be in my future.

Here is a picture of my condenser.

That's obviously a regular points distributor (the Unilite has an electronic module in place of the points, I think). The fact that it came with a condenser on it indicates it is probably a regular points distributor. Why Mallory (or Holley these days) used the same part number for two completely distributors confounds me.

Quite frankly, I don't see a condenser in the pictures you posted. A condenser looks like this or this : (Mallory "trash can" or equivalent).

On a sidebar, didn't those new Mallorys have a real poor advance curve from the factory? They were basically the same as a SBC. Hopefully the OP's was recurved to a flathead friendly degree.

I looked at Speedway's on-line catalog, and each version of this distributor has a different part number. (four versions: points in two-hole or three-hole mounting, Unilite in two-hole or three-hole) Maybe what you saw was some heading for all these distributors, which stupidly contained the part number for one version.

Last edited by JayChicago; 05-13-2022 at 11:40 AM. Reason: added the four versions available

Nope. Check Jeg's on line listing, just as I referenced in my post.

https://www.jegs.com/i/Mallory/650/2...saAl-JEALw_wcB.

I have little faith in Speedway information, given the description they give in their ad : "Mallory 2572101 Unilite Electronic Ignition Distributor 3 Bolt Dual Point Heavy Duty Points Unilite Electronic Ignition Distributor". Sheesh.

Good morning,

My bad. I thought I included a picture of the condenser. Here it is. It looks like new externally - no oozing at the top and no corrosion on the case. It has less than 35 miles on it! I’m going to order a new one today, never hurts to have a backup.
