Default Hose Clamps

I’m trying to stay original on my 40 sedan. The problem I’m having is with thes repop hose clamps. They seem very flimsy and the screw heads have a very shallow slot. Having some leaks . Is there another alternative other than a worm clamp ?

Buy a better machine screw. One made in America!

I think you need better clamps. Those look like cheap reproductions made of thinner metal than the originals. Look how the tab under the screw head has kind of given up on "standing tall". I have made it a point to keep all of the original hose clamps from all of the engines I have salvaged. I have the originals on my '51 and they look a lot more substantial than these, and they don't bend.

The remark on the machine screw also applies to the clamp itself. I would think that NOS clamps are out there someplace, given that they are "replacement" items and were used for many other applications. "SouthSide Obsolete"? (They seem to have everything.)

From the enlarged photo it looks like you could go 1 size larger on the clamp. That one looks too small.

They look like the junk ones that come in the hose kits. I tossed mine and bought the good ones at the parts stores. They have socket head bolts and tighten up nicely.

I'd suggest you utilize Indian Head Shellac. Even with the repop clamps, the leaks will become a non-issue.

Follow Kube’s advice regarding Indian Head Shellac. Using it and no leaks so far.

We're going to have to start calling you Indian Head Mike. I bet you even use it on your breakfast cereal in the morning!

Try the constant tension style hose clamp, can expand and contract with heat and maintain a seal......they come on modern day cars.

I have never heard of using this for radiator hoses Kube. Does it make it difficult to remove the hoses after using?

Great stuff!! Also good for many gasket applications. However, the Indian Chief in full headdress is no longer on the bottle, along with the words "Indian Head Shellac"!

Now called " Original Permatex Gasket Shellac Compound".Political correctness has come to Permatex!!

No problem whatsoever ...
This shellac has been around I believe since the 1940's. An "old timer" thing that works, period. It simply works!
It is imperative that the instructions be followed. Simple enough, allow the shellac to become tacky prior to fitment. That's it!

Ken, It was good to meet you in Tennessee. I recently replaced some hoses and clamps on my 49 and noticed the new ones are made heavier than the repops I put on 17 or so years ago.
That said, also check the cast iron on your neck connection. I've filled in excessive pitting with JB weld and sanded smooth.
