Default Dupont Centari Paint

When I restored my 32 many years ago I used Dupont Centari 99A Pitch Black
for all of my chassis parts. The name has now been changed to Axalta as
Dupont Paints were bought out a number of years ago. I've been told today's
99A is the same as it always was. Has anyone used the product recently and, if
so, what do you have for comments?

I last used it about 2 years ago. It still said Dupont Centari 99A Pitch Black on the label. 8022 reducer and the best hardener, I think 893? It looked and worked the same as 40 years ago.

My 35 3 window body was painted 2 years ago with Centari Pitch Black - I am not aware that the name changed.

Dupont Paint division was sold to Axalta and a lot of changes have taken place since. My local jober handles the Imron Elite SS paint but it is not the same as the original polyurethane formula. There suposedly is an Aerospace version called Imron 6000 but my local jober doesnt stock it. San Antonio doesn't have enough customer base for the aerospace products.

As far as Centari acrylic enamel, I don't know if there have been changes yet but there likely will be. Axalta wants to market their own crap under the Dupont name. I'm not impressed with their Imron Elite SS.

When I repainted my F1 in '95 I used 1988 Lincoln Dove Gray Centari. Last year I tried to buy a quart for touch up. They tried to cross the numbers over to Axalta but could not match it. Way too light. They gave me some black so I could work on matching it myself. Finally got it close. Disappointing.

You may still find the name Centari on label at a jobber who has old stock. Remember, a while back they took the lead out.

Carlisle Co bought Dupont paint division for $4.9 billion about a year ago. I think Centari with hardner is or was one of the best paints available. My granddaughter
worked for Dupont and now Carlisle developing colors for new car manufactures.
Carlisle also owns Dunkin Donuts. I'll have to ask her about Centari. G.M.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I'll have to see if I can scout out a local
body shop that uses today's Centari to see what they have to offer.

Call the paint suppliers that service body shops in your area they can tell you shops that use Centari. G.M.

Carlyle group was the investment company that purchased the Dupont coatings division in order to make money with it. It was reformed as Axalta using Spies Hecker products, Standox products and the Dupont products. They are now big into waterborn products and will go the way that all corporations go. Whatever sells best is produced and what doesn't goes away. Warren Buffet just recently invested near 560 million bucks into it so you know they are there to make him and all the other investors the big bucks.

It doesn't surprise me that the Centari label is only the same as the old paper label. Formulas are probably different and a good match will be impossible to find. Now days, the EPA is requiring body shops to go to water base paints. Drying equipment costs thousands, new paint guns are required and there is a learning curve to cope with. The good old days went with the flat heads.
