Gas in oil
I've been having problems with gas getting into the oil pan since I got my '40. I've made plenty of changes to the fuel system, but the problem persists. I'm starting to think the issue is less with the engine and more with me.
I recently read in another thread that the procedure to cold start should be pull the choke all the way out, pump the gas a couple times, start it and as soon as it starts push the choke all the way in and use the throttle to idle up until warm. Is that correct? I have been using the choke to idle it up until warm, but i'm reading that will flood it. Could running it with the choke out half way for extended periods cause gas to get into the oil pan? |

Re: Gas in oil
I'm thinking you might have an internal leak in your fuel pump and fuel is going down the oil fill pipe.

Re: Gas in oil
Sounds like your carb needle valve is not fully holding the pressure from your electric
fuel pump after you shut your engine off, allowing the gas to flow into your engine. Replace the needle valve and seat, re-set the float, check your fuel pressure regulator first to make sure it does not exceed 4 psi. Hope this helps.

Re: Gas in oil
My 8BA ran fine on 2-3 # max pressure...no leaks

Re: Gas in oil
It may be just me but I try to wean it off the choke asap, just using the throttle until warmed up. But I don't try and drive until warmed up. Your situation may be different.

Re: Gas in oil
Can’t believe peddling & choking can dilute the 6 qts of oil.

Re: Gas in oil
I recently had something similar and found a hairline crack in the bottom the bowl. I have heard that can happen from over tightening the power valve.

Re: Gas in oil
Like others I suspect leaking gasket at power valve or bad valve. Something internal or float level too high or defective needle and seat. Do you know how many lbs/in that pump is putting out? Many of the regulator valved change after they get warm from being in the engine compartment.

Re: Gas in oil
Choke only 1/2 way out to start cold. Gradually push it in when it starts and during warm up. That being said, they are all like women, gotta treat them the way they run best. My 2 ¢.

Re: Gas in oil
I bought an aftermarket electric fuel pump and the car always smelled like gas after off and sitting. found out pump was putting out 7-8 lbs pressure . fuel reg. st to about 3-4 lbs solved that problem.

Re: Gas in oil
Fordor41 I agree with you. But it's always hard to know what the pump is pushing and if the regulator is actually regulating.
I've used a mechanical pump in the past with no regulator. It can have it's problems too, none so far. Guess I would like to see someone, better then me, post a how to test your fuel pressure with a gauge on here. Know what condition your condition is actually in. . |

Re: Gas in oil
This is the third carb i've had on it and it is a recent rebuild from CharleyNY. Problem has persisted through all 3 carbs. I checked the pressure out of the regulator when I installed it, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to check it again to make sure nothing has changed.
The 59A I have in it is pretty worn out. Dry compression test yielded an average of 85 pounds and it has a good bit of blow by. It runs pretty well considering. Just trying to fix whatever I can until I can get the 8BA I have on my engine stand rebuilt to replace it. |

It's easier if you are using rubber lines. I have copper, bit more to do. No other way I guess. |
