So the other day I finally got the large timing gear off. Got the new aluminum one on yesterday and managed to get the two lines matched up after some cuss words. Before I close it up is there anything I should check first? Do I need to add any grease to the gears? I have new cork gaskets for the inspection plate and the front cover of the gears. Do cork ones need any gasket sealer put on?

Double check the crankshaft lineup is correct. Put a bit of grease across the gears, assemblyi lube is better but any will do.

Oil the gears after double and triple checking them. Make sure the nut is TITE.
Grease the plunger and spring. I usually shim the spring if reusing the old one.
Sealer on the gaskets is OK. A little goes along way.
If the rope seal is being replaced, do not cut it, oil it, do not grease it.

I suggest you take a picture of the gear alignment and post it here before closing things up.

Tighten the nut down well with the special tool then drive it home with a hammer and chisel a few times.

Here is a picture I took. I didn't see any markings on the crankshaft gear but a few places I read mentioned the key slot works also.

I just checked an extra crankshaft I have. It has a mark on 2 teeth that are side by side, one each side of the key way. The marked tooth to the right of my key way also has a “0” marked on the front of the tooth.

Is that a timing mark on that tooth. I think you may be off.

Upon second look, I can't tell where the crank mark is for sure.

I think the keyway should be to the left (in your picture) of the cam gear mark.

Yes , the key way is to the left. You’re one tooth off.

Just changed my timing gear and it appears you are off one tooth. The marked crankshaft tooth is to the right of the keyway.

Try to take a really good at the crank gear for the mark, it should be there. That'll let you know for sure.
I think the fellas are right, it does look from what we can see that you are off a tooth.

Still hard to tell where that mark is. Being a tooth off will throw the timing off.

I put the plate back on and and when I turned the engine over until the pin hit the dot. I took out the spark plug and it was TDC.???
