Rear Wide Five madness! What have I got?
So my customer's rear wide-fives were shot so I located another pair to replace them. Set 1 came off the truck with normal wheel bearing arrangement: 3" diameter, full depth. When I opened the grease seal on set 2, the bearings were 2 3/4" diameter and a little short depth-wise before stepping up to a 3" seal (see pics). What the hell do I have and what is the right bearing for set #2? I spoke to a trusted parts supplier who informed me that in 25 years of doing this he's never heard of such a thing. Leave it to me to stump the experts! I appreciate any input from anyone with familiarity with this and thanks!

The parts book shows two hubs and bearings for 1936. Bearing B-1225 1928-36
and 68-1225 1936-48. Bob |

As you take out that 36-48 rear bearing(smaller one) you will see a 68-1236 sleeve. This was installed to use the later bearing. Originally used the larger bearing from 1932-early 36.

Thanks! That is correct. My predecessor used the smaller bearings despite the fact that they are about 1/4" too short for the depth of the hub, then used the full-sized seal leaving the bearing able to slide side to side. Is this standard procedure? |

Re: Rear Wide Five madness! What have I got?
The two bearing differ in length by 0.0625" with the later smaller bearing 68-1225-A at 1.6562" long & the larger early bearing B-1225-A at 1.7187" Not a problem.
From your photo I suggest you add more grease to the bearing and the drum. The drum and the axle housing are both races for the bearing that should be packed full of grease. Also add grease to the ends of the bearings and the area in the drum where the end could contact. No grease on the axle tapers as your photo shows. That red disc brake grease will not hold up. Suggest a long fiber grease like NAPA SL3131. |
