Lubricant for Cross Shaft Woven Bushings
I am replacing the bushings on the brake cross shaft and decided to stick with the original style bushings with the woven insert. The originals were apparently impregnated with graphite, so I am wondering what the best method is for prepping the new bushings?
Would it be sufficient to just liberally coat the bushing with graphite powder? What about spraying on some Slip Plate? The supplier suggested never seize, but I think that would defeat the purpose of the woven style since the never seize would attract dirt and dust. I am probably over thinking this, but I really don't want to have to redo it anytime soon. Thanks for you input! |

Re: Lubricant for Cross Shaft Woven Bushings
Just think about the fact that original bushing lasted for approximately 85 years with I am certain "0" lubrication. Also consider the actual amount of rotation the shaft really encounters during braking. Now you are worried about using the correct lubricate which I am certain Ford didn't apply. Use what ever makes you feel good and go have fun driving your "A".

Anyone used the split Bronze bushing & did it work OK? Vermins' shaft was in good shape & it was an easy job. Lubed it with Wheel Bearing Grease.

Re: Lubricant for Cross Shaft Woven Bushings
Because the new bearing do not have the packing we add a grease fitting. We drill a hole thru the lower retainer for the fitting to pass thru and then drill/tap bushing to take one of the longer grease fittings.

Have used these also ... You can make ONE CUT at 45 degree angle, heat in boiling water (maybe hair dryer?) and slip them over shaft without removing the pinned on arms. Squeeze closed with gas pliers before they cool off... Seems if fabric was used that these would last another 87 years. |
