Craftsman tools being sold
Hi Barners,
Just heard on the radio that Sears is selling Craftsman tools to Stanley/ Black & Decker. Now I'll have no reason to go to Sears at all. Bruce/CT

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
As part of the agreement with Stanley/Black&Decker, Sears will continue to sell Craftsman tools and pay no royalty to Stanley. What is not clear is if the lifetime warranty on hand tools will continue.

JM35 Sedan worked for Black and Decker/DeWalt. He may be able to chime in here and add some insight.

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
Craftsman tools for the last 5-6 years (maybe longer) are not the tools they once were that's for sure.

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
News report I saw today stated that the Sears lifetime warranty would still be honored by Stanley/Black & Decker

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
It seems to me that a store that built its business on mailed & called in orders should be in the best spot to take advantage of todays internet shoppers.

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
That's about the only reason I go to Sears anymore. Too bad.
Hopefully B&D won't screw it up. They had their challenges in the past. My ex used to work for them in product development. One of her jobs was "product improvement," which meant working to make the product cheaper. Should have been "profit improvement." This was in the days when they still made their stuff here. |

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
Since KMart bought them, Sears has been slowly going downhill. They haven't kept up with todays marketing. The holding company seems like they're out to slowly destroy the Sears name. Used to be able to go and get just about any tool you needed at the store, get your car fixed or tires put on while you shopped. Now, there's nothing in the stores, the auto center is manned by incompetent people that think they're mechanics. Sales people no longer know their products. Just there to collect a paycheck. I have a store 5 minutes from my house and they are closing it. I have said for the past few years that I don't know how it stays open as there is hardly anyone shopping there. This was the flagship store for Connecticut. Not the same company that I grew up with. The only good thing for me is the Sears warehouse/ parts store is still open, less than 2 minutes from me. Such a shame for a retailer of it's size to die like this.

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
Sears and Craftsman were once a great place. They need to get their stuff together and get out of the brick and mortar business and just be an online store like Amazon has always been.

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
I have the last big, thick Shears and Rowboats catalog that came by mail in mint condition and original jacket ! Will it come a collectable now ? Last time I was in any Sears, I felt bad for sales folks, makes a really long day not being busy. (I know as I worked in a hardware store for some time)

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
Kmart (KKR) bought Sears for less than the real estate was worth. Could care less if the stores prospered or lost. This was just after Kmart came out of bankruptcy the second time. Go Figure

Sear will go the way of Montgomery Wards and their Power Kraft tools.

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
Well hopefully the Craftsman name will survive and be made in the USA. I went to Sears recently to buy some metric sockets. I would describe this experience as bleak. The store looked more like a flea market than a neat and orderly retail store. The selection in the tool department was sparse. I finally found the sockets (made in China), blew the dust off of them, and headed for the checkout. Stood there a good 20 minutes before a salesperson shuffled by so I could pay. It was really painful because I remember going to this same store with my dad years ago to buy just about anything we needed. I just don't see how they can pull out of the death spiral they are currently in.

Re: Craftsman tools being sold
With the right management Sears could probably do this but their head honcho is greedily dismantling the company to line his own pockets. He has put Sears in its final death spiral.

the Wards store here no longer had tools; their service counter would reimburse me for a matching Craftsman tool to replace a bad Power Kraft life time warranty tool. I guess with Ace selling Craftsman tools, probably won't see that scenario. |
