Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
I have been toying with an idea for a trunk lately. I thought it would be neat if the trunk looked like a stack of luggage but was actually one whole piece as to make the most use of the space. I was thinking of making a trunk and then creating a shell for it made from different suitcases etc.
Has anyone on here done anything like this, or maybe seen something similar? Any ideas or photos would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
I never have enough storage with out a trunk.
Idea, Trompe L'Oeil (fool the eye), construct the proper size box/trunk and have it airbrush, hand painted or decal in a Trompe L'Oeil manner, leather straps, brass corners, travel stickers. my wife is a artist paints is this venue all the time, Maybe a place that does the car wraps with vinyl wrap. They could come up with something to cover the box. great idea Richard |

You could even stack up some OLD suitcases & bond them together with HEAVY adhesive & strap the whole stack on. I have one with a MOUSE/RAT hole chewed in it! PERFECT for a car named, VERMIN--I "may" lash it on the roof, along with a spare tire. Bill W.

You can easily connect them and saw out the inner area to make it one. It is doable........ Plenty of vintage luggage on eBay.....and it looks better sitting on top of the wooden slats of the rack instead of sitting down inside.

A smidge off-topic, but reminds me of this ingenious '81 Porsche project with a 500 inch Caddy in the "luggage" area. Click the link for the whole deal! DD

The fan on the alternator in the last picture of reply #5 shows holes on the face.
It seems this would add to the noise and lower the air flow through the alternator. |

Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
I thought about a bale of hay for storage in my little pick-up. The old luggage would be cool. My wife buys old suitcases at antique shops very cheap because they are built like tanks.

Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
A few years ago, I saw a pick up in a fruit growing area of Canada where the owner had made a storage box and covered the sides and ends with timber from fruit boxes, labels and all. Looked like a stack of fruit boxes - had me fooled till I saw him open it.

Saw a pickup with about 17 cardboard Apple boxes, tied down in the bed.

Has anyone tried to build their own trunk? MAFCA has the plan on https://www.mafca.com/downloads/Tech...runk_Lewis.pdf

Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
Thanks for the ideas! The vinyl wrap is a great idea and would probably be the easiest to do.
31 Model A - is your luggage permanently attached together or can you pull them apart? Do you carry anything in the bottom suitcase? Brian - I have looked at those plans a couple of times, been debating on whether I should try it or not. |

I'll be removing everything in a couple of weeks before Sarah heads to Larry's house for winter work. I'll take photos of each step I posted above if you want. Cheers Ed and...it all looks better to have the bags displayed on the top of the rack than down inside...IMO!!!

I have made 4 trunks similar to what the vendors sell. There will not be a fifth unless it's in a glass bottle

The 1931 LaSalle trunk had a front that folded down to reveal three suitcases.

What is your reason? Just curious, as I just started building a trunk, using MAFCA / Lewis plans. Any suggestions or hints, will be appreciated. Thank You; Brian

Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
Brian the box itself is easy. What gives me a fit is the fitting of the vinyl covering. If you make the wrong cut you can ruin a big piece. Even after four I still found it quitte hard to do. Good luck with yours.

I used 3M 90 spray contact adhesive when covering a metal trunk with vinyl and it started to peel off at all the edges after a month or so. I re-glued the edges where it lifted with a brush/roll-on contact glue specifically made for vinyl with good success. Yours will be wood but suspect the spray can adhesive will give you the same problems. When I do it again this winter on my Model A wood trunk, I will use the vinyl glue and apply it with a roller as brushing it on takes too much time and produces lumps if you aren't careful. Attached photo of the finished metal trunk and the wood Model A trunk. The glue is HHS-66 Vinyl Cement manufactured by R-H Products Co., Acton, Mass 01720, (978) 897-8000. Glen

Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
Sewall & Glen:
Thank you very much for the suggestions, and yes I will be applying the glue with a roller. Additionally, the one I am copying has a leather edge, nailed on. Most of my parts are coming through Amazon and Antique Hardware and More. Just about $175.00, in supplies. I have all of the wood.

Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
Brian,
Nice looking trunk. Vinyl wrap should be easy since there are no compound curves to worry about. Building one from scratch sounds like fun.....good luck. Glen

Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
I have Cindys' old trunk, with wood strips on the outside. The areas between the strips has magazine ads, from the late '60's. I "think" it might be too BIG, even for my ZIP-A-RAK. "Maybe" I could fit it on the ROOF???
When I first found it, I couldn't fit it in my '59 Studebaker Lark. I poised it in the trunk & tied it down with rusty Barbed Wire, found nearby. There's a really JAGGED hole, where the lock cylinder once resided, I wunder if someone SHOT the lock out??? It "might" bring $987.17 on E-Bay. Then I could buy something FRIVOLOUS for the Dog. Re: Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?
I recently restored a car trunk made in about 1925, pictures attached, and here is what I found:
-Measure the footprint of the trunk first. If it does not fit a common carrier sold by most Model A suppliers, check Berts. Theirs is about an inch bigger than the carrier's sold by Bratton's and Synder's. Leave at least 1/2 inch all round the footprint to accomodate nail heads. -Trunks can be cut-down if you have finishing saws: or check with a cabinet maker. -Consider using a fabric to match the top of your car:LaBaron-Bonny has it. -Before you do any fabric cutting, get rosin paper from Lowes, HD, etc., and cut a pattern one inch too large in all dimensions. Use that pattern on your trunk so you get an idea of how to cut seams and corners. -Your fabric should be warm before gluing. I laid my fabric in the sun. -Cut the corners on rosin paper first to get the shape. -For the leather corners use only vegetable oil tanned leather: soak it in warm water first and stretch it wet on the corners. Nail it down as you are stretching it. -The leather should be either 6oz (3/32"s thick) or 8 oz (1/8" thick). -Consider putting a false bottom in the trunk to hide the bolt heads. -Glue felt on the inside. Good luck! Last edited by BudP; 12-12-2015 at 10:25 PM. Reason: spelling correction |
