Trunk that looks like stack of luggage?

I have been toying with an idea for a trunk lately. I thought it would be neat if the trunk looked like a stack of luggage but was actually one whole piece as to make the most use of the space. I was thinking of making a trunk and then creating a shell for it made from different suitcases etc.

Has anyone on here done anything like this, or maybe seen something similar? Any ideas or photos would be appreciated.

I never have enough storage with out a trunk.
Idea, Trompe L'Oeil‎ (fool the eye),
construct the proper size box/trunk and have it airbrush,hand painted or decal in a Trompe L'Oeil‎ manner, leather straps, brass corners, travel stickers.

my wife is a artist paints is this venue all the time,

Maybe a place that does the car wraps with vinyl wrap. They could come up with something to cover the box. great idea

Trick Idea, Rich!
You could even stack up some OLD suitcases & bond them together with HEAVY adhesive & strap the whole stack on. I have one with a MOUSE/RAT hole chewed in it! PERFECT for a car named, VERMIN--I "may" lash it on the roof, along with a spare tire.

This is the photo that gave me the idea for luggage instead of a trunk for Sarah.



You can easily connect them and saw out the inner area to make it one. It is doable........

Plenty of vintage luggage on eBay.....and it looks better sitting on top of the wooden slats of the rack instead of sitting down inside.

The fan on the alternator in the last picture of reply #5 shows holes on the face.
It seems this would add to the noise and lower the air flow through the alternator.

I thought about a bale of hay for storage in my little pick-up. The old luggage would be cool. My wife buys old suitcases at antique shops very cheap because they are built like tanks.

A few years ago, I saw a pick up in a fruit growing area of Canada where the owner had made a storage box and covered the sides and ends with timber from fruit boxes, labels and all. Looked like a stack of fruit boxes - had me fooled till I saw him open it.

Thanks for the ideas! The vinyl wrap is a great idea and would probably be the easiest to do.

31 Model A - is your luggage permanently attached together or can you pull them apart? Do you carry anything in the bottom suitcase?

Brian - I have looked at those plans a couple of times, been debating on whether I should try it or not.

I really like this! actually would be ideal because one could be a tool box and the other used for odds and ends, I going to do this, thanks for the picture

The suitcase (c.1930) is bolted to the frame from the bottom by small carriage bolts into the case and through 1X2s the length of the depth of the case. This gives extra support and security since the case is made of rattan. I run the straps under the rack and through the inlets provided for straps, more for show than security. Inside the case I put stuffing, old blankets and towels, this keeps it from collapsing from the weight of the Gladstone bag. The Gladstone bag(c.1890-1930) is secured to the case by running the straps through the strap loops on the top of the case, first running the straps behind the rack support bar for more security. It is not permanently secured to the suitcase. Inside the bag I carry the luggage cover and the entire auto cover. After all this was done, I found the bag had a tendency to slide FWD so I took two paint stir sticks, cut them and covered them with black material and then slid them down and in between the bag and the rack support bar. No one can see the sticks unless they look behind the bag. The tension keeps the sticks in place and not required to be attach permanently.

I'll be removing everything in a couple of weeks before Sarah heads to Larry's house for winter work. I'll take photos of each step I posted above if you want.

For your setup I agree, but with the trunk built for the rack it doesn't much matter because you can't see the wood slats when the rack is down. Not until the rack is in the UP position it make a difference. In the up position the wood shows toward the back, which looks much better.In the flipped position as you suggest you would see the "unfinished" side when in the UP position.

Which is probably all a moot point if you leave the "luggage" on all the time, like I do with my trunk.
