Default Steering column support problem

I was planning on installing a new steering column support that attaches under the dash rail to take the place of my tank mounted support. From pictures I have seen posted in the past, I thought it would just be a matter of bolting in the new support and taking the rubber and cap off the original support. My problem is that the new support seems too short. When I attempt to install it the steering column hits at the original support. What am I doing wrong.

Did you make a spacer? See this thread for a previous discussion of the topic.

Most of us "full bodied" well fed persons have prefered to cut off the old bracket, leaving the original bracket mounting flange riveted and soldered to the tank.

I will now! My spacer will need to be 1/2". Does this seem ok?

On my 1930 coupe, the steering column support fit fine. But on my 1930 Briggs Town Sedan, I had the same problem you have. It is probably the same as your Cabriolet. I had to make a spacer also. I made it from square aluminum tubing. I believe the overall height was 5/8 inch. This centered the steering column in the original bracket. I just removed the rubber and installed the original cap.

Are there two (or more) lengths to the steering column support? I bought one for my 29 huckster that fit right on without any spacer. Now I have one for my 29 coupe and it needs a spacer. The huckster below.

Sure--whatever it takes to make it work. I think my spacer is 3/8".

Why not make the same improvements Ford made, on cars that are driven rather than judged in Fine Point?

First, loosen the bolts a little on the bottom of the steering column so you have a little wiggle room. Find some thick washers and add to them till you get the support where you want it. You may need one or two washers more on one side to make it even. With the rubber out of the old support you should have about 1/8" clearance. Don't forget to tighten the lower column bolts.
