Default Let's see the before and after pictures!

I was hoping some of you would post up some before and after pictures of your Model A's. I think it would be cool to see what everyone started with.

I started with the cowl section and the back wall of the cab. A year and a week later, I drove it from Chicago to Detroit.

Very nice cars; a real inspiration to keep at mine. This is what my Dad started with in 1973 and the results. Time and use has taken its so it is apart again. The memories of growing up with him working on the car he loved will be cherished.

Hi Brent ,
What a stunning looking coupe .
I am about to paint my 1930 coupe and would like to paint it in your colors.
I live in Melbourne Australia.
Can you tell me the name of the colors you used for the body and the top roof section and the pinstripe.
I look forward to hearing from you
Regards
Mark

Not a rookie question at all, My Dad used slap up side the head when I was a kid as I kept calling it his "Business Coupe"
This is a 1928 "Special Coupe" made for only one year starting in June/July of 28. Some stories go that Ford did it to shore up lagging sales against Chevy's coupe, (equipped with a six) He had the top covering fall to the belt rail to give it a "Limo" look. Apparently didn't help and was discontinued soon, as it was more expensive for the wood and extra top material. No one can tell how many were cranked out as Ford regarded them the same as regular standard coupe in production figures.
Back when I started I knew of two cars now I have photos of maybe 30 from the net and from some seen in my travels. Seems more on the West coast survived but I am not sure. They could be living in dark barns in the East.
Thanks for asking, and BTW the Business Coupe some came with an Oval Porthole in the same location which was neat looking too. Mounted at a slant it must have been quite the stunner at the local golf courses, driven by only the most descerning businesss men!
Cheers Hitchhiker!

Default 9-19-28 Special Coupe

Basket case literally in a barn in pieces, seven years to clean and assemble and another twenty two before the money appeared to truly restore it. Jim

Cheers Hitchhiker!
thanks for the knowledge! I've seen the oval ones before, but the special coupe is awesome! I need one now

Live and learn! That's new to me, and a great looking rarity. Thanks for the history lesson.

Here is a before and after of my 1930 Town Sedan...the first picture was taken around 1991 when the previous owner bought the car. The bottom picture was taken in 2009.

here are my picks. Original restoration started in 1972. I have owned for 5 years and just complete the project, but there is a vibration when the engine is running. I think it is the flywheel. because i put a crankshaft with the balancing weights.

With all the flywheels I do we checked a couple before they were cut and you would not believe how out of balance they were. We also do the cranks with flyweights and sometimes we have to weld weight to them to balance the crank because of balance problems.

If the vibration is at a standstill I would check the flywheel first or the crank second. If it vibrates when moving I would check the universal joint.

This feels like a repeat. I have these same photos in "Post A Picture Of your "A"." THIS is where they belong !
The first photo is a year after I bought it, in 1962.
The second is while it was under restoration. I drove it a lot while restoring it.
The third is about six years later. The photo is a photo of a photo, so the colors are not rich enough, but you get the idea.

Here's me oiling my car up beside the house getting ready for a run back to college--room mate and mother standing by. circa 1962

Second photo is me on sentimental journey back to same house last weekend during Michigan Model A Roundup. First time my Ford had been back to the old neighborhood in about 48 years.

Here are two pictures of our '31 40B. The first is just after it was rolled out of a 38 year hibernation in a heated basement garage in Yonkers, NY. The second is after "cleanup" in 1998 including new tires and top, wheel and stripe repaint, some replating, and a engine overhaul. The paint it still wears was applied in 1951. Gar Williams

Forgive me as I am just a 25 year old. Heres what I started with in Aug of 2007

Little progress in early 2008

Very famous car I grew up reading about.

Me in Traditional Rod N Kulture drag racing my fellow banger brethren Model A Dave at Dragfest 2010.

Someday when I grow up and am responsible enough I will restore my coupe to original condition but for now I live my youth with a Gow-Job.

Date coded 1977 and still had the knobbies when I started driving it around. The owner who had purchased it and drove it home in 1966 at some point bought new tires. When I bought the car in 2007 they all still held air great. One developed a leak in the inner tube so I have the spare which was a goodyear diamond on it at the moment. They are pretty cracked but have held up great under all the driving my car like a race car I have done . Still waiting for them to throw a tread someday.-Weeks

Makes m ewonder about the definition of starting with a car. How much of it do you need to have to say you actually started with a car? Some of you started with a frame and a dream..... great inspiration.

My 29 Closed Cab Pickup in 1969. Progress is very slow, I've spent most of the years since then playing bluegrass banjo and just driving it instead of restoring it. I'm hoping to get a bunch done on it this next summer.

I had the same situation with the bad vibes. I used Les Andrews advice in his manual. Flywheel Housing Variation Measurement page 2-22 and Flywheel Wobble Test page 2-23. The housing, in my case, required .020 shims and the wobble indicated .015 which was corrected with a disc sander.

My 1931 Woody was a big bed pickup. It was painted pink from top to bottom, inside out and had one functioning brake. The before picture was after 40 years of ownership.

Before/after pictures sure make it look easy. I also find it interesting how the start and completion (or near completion) pictures vary in the amount of time between them. I am certainly hoping for a short time.

Here's my before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2IjBUESAEQ I say moving pictures still count as pictures

Those are Business Coupes, 54-A. Only made in 1929 with the oval windows, and only about 37,000 manufactured.

In 1992 on a trip from Chicago to Santa Fe - wife & her Dad

In 2005 bro-in-law took it apart to update (but didn't); and the way we got it in Sep, 2011

Old No. 7 in process Nov, 2011

Done Dec 24, 2011 - in time for a surprise Christmas ride for wife's Mom

An artsy pose Spring 2012

A bit more to go...

Next - I'd like to find a '31 SW Town Sedan, but hopefully mostly done...

Are you sure the visor isn't in the barn? It must be in there somewhere!

Great car, by the way. My second favorite body style, and I love that patina. Keep the trunk!

I am sure it was... if you look at the table on top of the car in the picture, it was starting to push the car through the rotten floor. I had to break the table to get the car out.

The barn pancaked the year after I bought the car, and before I realized the visor was missing

I also was missing the hood shelves, and radiator apron. I have since found a set with a patina that matches the car I just have to install them. Still trying to find a visor though, even Berts didn't have one.

The trunk is staying, the only thing the car will get is mechanical restoration and an interior so that it is comfortable to drive.

I thought that at first too, Purdy. But on closer examination, I think it's a 29. Look at the steering wheel, the door molding near the cowl, and the glimpse of the pass. side firewall.
