Default Heater in 36 Ford

I am attempting to install a early 1940s Car Heater in my 1936 Cabriolet.
The car is 12 volt and I will use a reducer for that part.
I intend to Install on the center trans hump and I may hang it behind the shifter.
Has anyone done this? Any Ideas?
Thanks

It would fit without obstructions offset to the passenger side, as normally installed. As centered, you'd have the engine block obstructing the path of the hoses, and the shift lever wouldn't shift to second or reverse.
On a side note, you posted a similar heater question oh January 11. It's best to keep similar questions on the same post, so your answers aren't helter skelter. That post didn't disappear, it just went down the list as it got older, and will refresh to the top of the list when someone posts on it again.

Here is a 36 coupe I had a few yrs ago.You can see the heater sort of behind the steering column in pic.I made a template so that the heater hose ports & mounting studs cleared the stock gas pedal linkage. The car had a T5 trans. I switched out the 39 gearbox to a T5 after the heater was installed.

I have responded to the question of the proper location of a '39-40 style of heater in a '36 Ford before,
Attached is a pix of the heater in my '36.. To repeat what was said in comment #2 by ford38... the center position is not a good location in a '36 Ford for a heater.

If you want a great heater that produces heat instantly and avoids water hoses, think about the gasoline fired Southwind heater. My '35 had one. I think it was a dealer install. Pretty simple, requiring an insert under the carb to draw vacuum and a small hole in the top of the fuel bowl for the fuel pickup. It would need a voltage reducer, but that is not a big deal.

They are available. I have one but it is missing the plumbing parts to the carb.

I have a Southwind, Junior Model, in my 35 Ford Pickup. It will run you out of the cab in 90 Seconds.

Here's the heater I put in my coupe. I doubt there is room behind the motor since the water outlets come through the firewall. I also am 12v and found a small 12v computer fan that works without a volt dropper. Plenty of foot room for a passenger. Plan your holes so the attachment nuts rest on the flats of the firewall

If you put it behind the gear shift, you may interfere with gas pedal linkage, and how you gona get hoses to it. Better to put it in front of the passenger like shown in johndee's shot.

To answer the OP question.I did it (see pic I posted) and hose connections cleared the linkage ,block, and intake as well as mounting studs with the heater I used. Not all heaters will work.Make templates to see if yours will.I used hole punches from Eastwood & Co instead of drilling. Here is a close up pic if that helps.

Duce Lover- Can you post pictures of the other side of the firewall to show the rest of install.
I am getting my Fan motor rebuilt and my heater core checked and flushed so the install should start in about a week. Both center and side sound good. JUST A MATER OF PLUMBING AND DEFROSTER ROUTUNG.

Sorry I’ve no pictures but I fitted an old heater in my 36 Cabriolet... I mounted it on the raised centre section of the firewall. It was tight but I think it looked better centred than off to one side.I changed the inlet and outlet pipes with copper fittings from the local plumb shop... 1/2” od solder type fittings and tube . The outlet ran to one of the bottom hoses with one of the fittings that go through the wall of the rubber tube... the feed was from one of the water pump fittings and through a heater control valve operated via a cable. The original 6 v fan was seized so I obtained a 12 v motor and made it fit the heater. I could have, on reflection, used one of those flat square fan assemblies that you see on computers etc... you can get them in various sizes and they are nice and slim so would give you more room to push the heater back a little.

Just found an old picture of it... blow it up and you can just make it out.

Sorry,I lost those and all pics when my hard drive crashed 8 yrs ago. I did not connect the defroster ports-left then closed. From what I remember both hose port connections were at or near the top.1 hose went to the head on the right side(very short and easy-I used a 90 degree shut off valve fiitting in the head. The other went to the right water pump.I found a aftermarket pump with a heater hose port.

Pete
How did you attach the heater and where you run the plumbing through the firewall?
Were you able to run any defroster hoses and vents to the windshield?
Thanks

The heater involved was mounted and held in place by its water inlet and outlet pipes. The pipes are threaded with nuts - carefully measure for location and punch two holes in the firewall, push/position the heater pipes through the holes and tighten the nuts down. No accommodation were made for windshield defroster....
