Screw a axle knocker on the shaft, get a big hammer, put both knees under the wheel, push up and whack the axle knocker.

Before getting a vintage Snap On wheel puller, I've done it two ways:

Drilled and tapped into the steering wheel hub which allows you to use a modern type puller.

Second way was to use a large bearing separator under the wheel and used that as a puller.

Hi,
Thank you for your Ideas.
After i saw the pic of the puller, i got the idea for a thick rubber Ring!
Aircooled vw rear torsion bar rubber!
I will try that with a bearing separator , i guess
Thanks again

I use a bearing separator from HF. I put it under the wheel with some cloth padding and use a two jaw puller. It works just like the Ford tool. I have never damaged anything doing it this way. I also have bought tools and taken them back.

I've removed some steering wheels that were really stuck fast to the shaft taper. Whatever type of puller you decide to use, make sure you have something resilient or some type of padding on the back of the wheel hub, and something on the threaded end of the shaft to keep it from mushrooming or otherwise damaging the end of the shaft. I usually back the hex nut off untill it's even with the top of the shaft, and then place a small piece of flat stock on top of the nut to press against. I would also NOT recommend hammering in anyway on the threaded end of shaft, nor on the back of wheel at the hub. The KRW style puller is the best, but in my desperation to remove a wheel with no puller available, I made my own which has worked well for me and some of my friends.

WD-40 is really not a good lubricant nor penetrant, and it can ruin some plastics. It was originally developed as a water displacement.

Keep your eyes peeled for this tool. This one is missing the rubber protection on the yoke but some rubber hose will fix that. As mentioned, when needed, its a real time saver.

I have a KRW steering wheel puller, If I didn't, I would drill and tap 2 holes likes suggested above and make a pin to go into the shaft like in the picture of the Winfield copy has to prevent damaging the threads by mushrooming the top of the shaft and use a modern puller. Under no circumstance would I put anything on the shaft to hit it with a hammer. I am not sure when Ford started putting threaded holes in the steering wheels but I think up to maybe 39 they have that tapered part where it meets the mast jacket.

I tried i yesterday without luck.....
Someone else before me hit the shaft with a hammer so the threads are not in good condition anyways. That i can fix once i have the steering wheel of the shaft.
I try to avoid to drill the steering wheel....
It is a german Bosch 1932 Ford Coachbuild steering wheel !
I rather cut the the steering box shaft off and drill/ream the shaft out of the wheel
The hole assembly is in such a good condition...
Still looking for.Ideas

I have been told that you can put padding behind the clam shells from the front of a torque tube then use a modern bearing puller under that. I haven't tried yet, that happens next weekend on a friend's 36.
