What have we got here?

I get to plug my favorite English Telly show again... The British series "All Creatures Great And Small" on PBS is set in the Yorkshire Dales circa 1940, my ancestral home and year of my birth!
My question: Is this called a Lorry, and does it have an English V8-60? Sorry for the poor quality picture.

I watch the show every week and saw the truck last evening. It looked to me that it surely had some Ford characteristics. The grille seemed so similar to a 1933/34 Ford passenger car. Possibly 35/36 Ford pickups and trucks.

Yes, I'm quite sure it's an English Ford, but i've never seen another like it. I'm also thinking that the thick white fender striping is probably not correct.

Over there across 'the pond', LORRY is a generic term for a larger truck rather than a brand name. Kind of similar to referring to an automobile hood as a "bonnet" over there or using the word "boot" for the trunk. No telling for sure what motivates that LORRY, but if it is a V8-60, I'd bet it's plum wore-out trying to grunt all that weight up to highway speeds a few million times by now.

It's a Model 61 Ford truck. Can't tell the exact year but Ford began production of these vehicles in 1935. Production started with the 85HP flathead but I think switched to a 4-cylinder version as more popular for the taxes imposed on the truck with the larger engine.

You have very good taste in television programs. I'll bet you watched the first series as well back in the 1970s.


Are you a fan of British detective series as well such as Morse?

I messaged Alan about the show.....I’ve seen all the old ones and read all the books.....I just picked up a book by the original authors son, about him.....We have BritBox at our house and frequently watch British detective shows.....if anybody gets Vintage Truck Magazine, there was a piece on a “Thames”.....is that what we’re looking at here?.....Mark

The Fordson Thames 7V came out in 1937 and is a heavier duty truck and not the same as a Model 61. I'll post a couple of pictures. I think Ford made the Thames through 1949. The precursor to the Thames was the 1935-36 Fordson (see attached catalog image). For a very brief time Ford also made a Model 51 version in England (see other attached catalog image). All are cool looking trucks.

I had to sort through the Model 61 truck when pulling the information together for my book. The Model 61 uses a lot of parts from the Model 51 but then a lot of very similar but different parts too. For example the wheels look very much like the US versions, but they are different. Otherwise, I'm not that knowledgeable on English Fords.

I too am a fan of some British shows. Current runs of Professor T, Sherlock from a couple years ago, All Things, and a few more. It's so much more relaxing to watch than most US TV shows.

Dave, thanks for the truck pics....you can see some similarities in the lines but it’s obvious they’re different trucks. I think a person could study these vehicles a great deal and still be surprised at finding something new........Great Stuff!!.........Mark

When I am rolling down the interstate around 70mph it amazes me how the newer semi-tractor's with a 53' loaded trailer zip right past me, going up hills, and all I hear is the tire noise. When I was a kid in the 1950's those 48-53 Ford semi-tractors with a 35' or 40' trailer would slow down considerably to climb even a modest hill. You could hear many shifts of the 4x4 gearbox. These new semi tractors don't shift at all. I cannot help but wonder what it was like with the 4 cylinder BB trucks. They probably had a long line of impatient cars wanting to pass in the hilly countryside.

I started driving in 1983.... I know I had it a lot easier in that Cabover Kenworth than the guys before me.........now you have a different license if the truck is an automatic or not.....Mark
