59ab in a 33 Ford
Can a 59ab be dropped into a 33 ford coupe with water pumps and fenders attached?
I am trying to put a 59ab in my 33 and it looks like the motor mount wings of the pumps are going to hit the inner fenders. Thanks Brad

I think I would remove the fenders, radiator and inner fenders, would make installing the motor much easier.

Re: 59ab in a 33 Ford
I have never messed with a '33 Ford, so I don't know and I'm just asking.
Does the engine mouth using "L" brackets bolted the block and then the front cross member like a '32? If so, you're going to need to fab up some motor mounts for the 59AB pumps to rest on. |

The "L" brackets are '32 only. Strangely enough, the '51 Merc I put in my coupe still had those mounting holes drilled and tapped.

The radiator is off. It was a running car, just swapping out the motor.
If anything has to come off, I would think it would be easier to take the water pumps off and put them back once the inner fenders are cleared. I’d rather not take anything off though if it’s possible. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Those drilled and tapped holes served a purpose all the way through flathead production. Here can be seen complete engines being moved either to or from the electric motor 'run-in' sequence, as these can be seen with the adapter for coupling with the electric motors. The brackets seen here for hanging the engines bolt to those tapped holes. What I'm seeing here almost suggests that these engines were hanging like this when painted. Coop |

Re: 59ab in a 33 Ford
I take the 59A in and out of my 33 with no problem. Once the radiator and grille are out of the way there is enough room to get it in there. That said, my car is not show quality so I am not concerned if it scrapes the inner fender on the way in or out. You could do it easily without the water pumps and fit them once the motor is past the tight spot. They could be fitted while suspended somewhat higher than it's final position and then lowered down onto the (modified) mounts.

Thanks Matt. That’s what I was thinking.
Removing the fenders will require quite a bit of work since my headlights are wired up and I’d have to cut those wires and resplice them to put everything back together. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: 59ab in a 33 Ford
I've moved a 59AB in/out of a 34 many times. It is usually easier if you pull the water pumps (simple job really), just so you don't have those two "bull horns" catching on things.
You will only have room for a single fan belt pulley, what do you have for that? I usually take a later pulley (the 1940 or so that drive the fan off of it) and cut the fan mount off - works great in a 32 - 34 chassis and front cross-member. As noted above, you'll need those little 'U brackets" to align the water pump mounts with the cross-member and raise the engine to the correct height. You'll NOT be using the 32 style motor mounts! You should be using the 34 generator (or another early generator with a fan mount) and fan - as they are designed for your radiator setup. You'll obviously need new radiator hoses for the heads . . . though I don't remember if stock 34 lower hoses will work??? |

Re: 59ab in a 33 Ford
Folks use the lower hose for an 8ba as it has a very slight offset. Sorry, I do not have the gates part #

Re: 59ab in a 33 Ford
It had a new double crank pulley. I took it to a machinist friend and he lathed off the front pulley.
I ordered the motor mount adapters from the ebay link above. They should be in this week. I have replaced the 33 front crank hole spring mount (not sure what the real name is) with a model A piece and have ground the top off of it. I have a 33/34 generator and fan, radiator hoses for the top. Need to get bottom hoses, thanks for the info Cas3. Once the spacers come in I should be good to go. I appreciate all of the input fellas!

Here is the hose kit reference according to the seller of the spacers. These spacers work great with our 33-34 and 35-36 hose kits. These are listed on the HAMB https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/flathead-lower-radiator-hoses-s-curve.1005804/ |
