Default "Burp" air pocket out of cooling system

Put in new summer 160 thermostats in my '52 and think I have an air pocket since car quickly gets hot, goes clear to right end of gauge, then after sitting shut down for five minutes, I re-start and engine cools right down to proper temp and stays there. This has happened twice. Can anyone suggest a sure-fire method to get the air pocket out other than draining and re-filling the system? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. This forum is just the best.

do your thermo stats have a breather hole? or did you drill one? i was told to warm up the motor to temp with the radiator cap off and when it reached its temp which is also 160 for the stats and when the water in the tank went down just fill as nessasary. hope that made sence.

i always add 1/16 breather hole to mine if they dont come with them, this lets there always be some movement around the spring and doesnt allow air to get trapped behind it.
