Default rear axle key orientation

hello- i read all the posts on with many descriptions but no pictures- rear axle key orientation is said to be a cause of hub splitting and orietntion is often described as 'up' or 'down' but i have trouble understanding this.

so pls look at my rough sketch and tell me which is correct, fig 1 or fig2---it seems to me that the key contour ought to fit the groove rounded contour thank you

TIP#271: My key method, I put a small ding on each side of the keyway, lay the key with the radiused end, IN & DOWN, tap it in with the outer end sticking out over the threads, slightly. Put on the drum & tap the key in flush with axle shoulder. Then the washer & nut & torque to 105 Ft Lbs. After a week or so, I re-check the torque. NEVER use Loctite on the taper, "YOU'LL BE SORRY"!!!---Chief always sed, "YES, I'm SORRY, but I've lurned to LIVE with it"----LOL
