Spartan horn sounds sick
Okay I decided to pull my horn apart to try and figure out why it sounds like a dead Ahooga. Motor seems to run just fine but one thing I noticed is the brass vee shaped contact on the vibration plate that the gear hits was slightly loose . Is this suppose to be rock solid tight and is it just reamed in there?

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
Yes, it is supposed to be pressed solid tight into the diaphragm with the "chisel point" 90 degrees vertical relative to the motor armature frame. If it's loose, it's bad and the "chisel point" should be made from hardened steel not brass. " A&L makes the best new replacement diaphragm but a good original is preferable to a new one if it's in good shape and not worn down.

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
Okay I tightened up the chisel point and my mistake it looks to be a hard steel and in fairly good shape. I put it back together and no change. I see what I thought are alignment holes but I could be mistaken. I'm not sure if the chisel point is in the right alignment with the gear.

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
Put a small amount of grease on the ratchet that rubs on the chisel V. If you haven't done that yet it should help.

Also, clean the commutator with acetone.

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
I had one with similar symptoms. I put new gaskets on both sides of the diaphragm and the horn worked perfectly.

Mine does that on both of my A's about every 2 years or so. All I do is spray some non-flamable electrical cleaner on the commutator while it is spinning. Then I lube both ends of the armature with a little 3-in-1 oil. It works every time for me.

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
okay next question - is the gear on the end of the motor shaft suppose to be connected tight to the shaft (makes sense) mine is wobbly and I can spin it with my finger and the shaft does not turn. If I power it up the gear turns when the motor runs.

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
Yes, it should be tight on the armerature shaft. Rod

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
Right on the money no lock washer, I'm going to find a nice star washer - also quickly learned it is a reverse thread ...

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
Washer did the trick - I'm still going to replace the diaphragm because the chisel might get loose again and gaskets
thanks |

Re: Spartan horn sounds sick
Put a small amount of grease on both ends of the shaft and make sure you oil the pads regularly, should be good to go.
