side mirror hinge pin
Recently purchased a side mirror (hinge style) and the diameter of the pin is too small for my hinge. It is made for the original narrower (.233 ish) rather than the .250 as my car requires. I really don't want a pin that is not carrying the load as it should. The vendors don't sell the oversized pin to fit the mirror. What have you fellas done?

Re: side mirror hinge pin
The pin with my hinge mirror had the correct size pin. Is the hinge pin original size, or has someone previously fitted an oversize pin. You've quoted the sizes, but I don't know the original sizes, which is why I asked about original pin size.

Re: side mirror hinge pin
In the case of an oversized pin, we use drill rod and fabricate the necessary size on a lathe. If you do not have a lathe, you will likely need to find someone who does and have them make it for you.

Re: side mirror hinge pin
This might save you some time if car is a driver.
I use "ejector pins'' used when manufacturing plastic injection molds. They come in size increments of 1/64 inch so finding a standard 15/64 inch (.234 inch) mirror pin is not a problem. They are hardened so use caution and wear safety glasses as they might shatter when hammering on them. I leave the head on the pin and use a die grinder to cut to length. http://websales.amtektool.com/viewit...-ejector-pins? Click on small diagram near top of the page to display a condensed table of sizes available. http://websales.amtektool.com/image?...P-prodinfo.JPG The only down side is that you can not knurl the shaft to hold the pin in. If fit in door side of hinge is snug you do not need to knurl them though. Also the head is the wrong shape for fine point judging but for a driver shape does not matter. As I remember these were mirror pins but might have been pins for use without mirrors. www.modelastore.com closed Mondays. Last edited by Benson; 01-13-2014 at 09:06 AM. |

Re: side mirror hinge pin
You can make a shim to "line" the worn hole (assuming that's the issue) in other words like a sleeve. Shim stock comes in varied thicknesses so pick one that allow a couple of thousandths clearance.

Re: side mirror hinge pin
Is your car a Slant 4 door, Victoria or 68C Cabriolet? They use larger pins, the same size as a 1932-1948 Ford since they only have two hinges, Ford made them larger diameter. You did not mention what kind of car you have.

Re: side mirror hinge pin
Thanks everyone. I have a '30 briggs fordor that uses the oversized hinges. I know for certain that they were original to the car which is another indicator that I had one of those odd-duck cars! The oversized pins sold by vendors are not long enough, and also not in SS. I don't care about SS and this is not a car that will be judged (except by know-it-all's in clubs).
Benson- since the ejector pins are hardened, I am assuming that tapping them is out of the question? Brent- good idea, as always. Don't have a lathe, but will try to find someone perhaps. |

Lee, I am not sure if you could use a die to cut threads but think they are too hard. Maybe some of the tech types will chime in on Rockwell numbers and such. High Hardness Core pins are from premium HOTWORK Steel with Hot Forged Heads for long lasting production use.
They come in several lengths from 4 inches to 14 inches as shown in the chart. The thing that makes them nice is they come in 1/64 increments so if a fellow damages the holes in hinge just go up 1/64 and redrill. It would save some otherwise damaged parts from the scrap heap.
