what is proper tire pressure for 19" wheels

I am embarrassed to ask this question but i have gone over these tires numerous times and cannot find proper PSI.

The only time that I had one blow up was when I installed a NOS allstate that I bought on eBay that had rayon cords. I didn't even notice that the tire had rayon cords beforehand. The tire must have been made before WW2 and the start of nylon cord tires.

an important item now a days to invest in is a digital tire pressure gauge. With the modern TPMS its essential to be right on the mark with the pressure. Many cars now have the psi readout on the cluster along with the low tire light. I now use it on my A, mower, etc..

On Ebay I see $3.00 ones and $150, do you know which is best?

I would go with a quality name brand which i think would be accurate. There is this type and the one i have has the air chuck part of it.

If you buy an unknown brand test it against an known accurate unit.

Just because any thing is digital does NOT mean its better. Quality and accuracy are not synonymous with digital.

I threw away several pencil type gauges I bought the last couple of years. They were all over the place with readings. Poor quality, pretty pathetic. Thankfully I kept the Milton gauges I had from the late 60's, they still seem accurate.

Will check out the digital gauges Mitch showed, and buy one to use for a reference against my old gauges.

OK so if it needs to be 35 PSI why is it that my Goodyear tires say maximum pressure is 32 PSI???

In my experience, tires generally can be quite severely overinflated without damage.

Back in my boat trailer building days the normal printed rating on the tires was typically 28 or 32 or even 35. Go read the literature the tires come with and you find out that they are rated at those pressures for those applications and loading. Increase the loading and the tire wants more pressure to maintain the same "footprint." The maximum is set by the manufacturer.

For those boat trailer tires, the maximum could be up to 60 psi with a few load rated up to 75 psi.

My current 4x8 trailer and tires are good for up to 60 psi. And this on an 8" wheel. I normally put 40 psi in a tire marked for 30. Who knows when a short use trailer might be overloaded for the trip - or the tire pressure leak out a little before I have a chance to top it off?

On the Internet are stories of people "overinflating" their tires to achieve up to 75 mpg with their VW TDI diesels. This I tried first on my TDI with a regular tire, but over a period of 10K miles effectively ruined the tire due to "cogging" (which is tread wear occuring at an angle and makes the tires noisy.) Rotating the tires periodically helps prevent this which I had not done.

Now I'm running "low rolling resistance" tires on the VW and while the car rides best at 30 psi, I typically run at 40 psi. And rotate the tires. The ride is a little choppier than at the rated pressure but no problems with tire life and I'm able to achieve 55 mpg easily.

But these are "steel belted radials" which are a bit different than the boat trailer tires or my trailer tires which would fall into the "bias ply" category I believe.

The structural and performance differences between bias ply and radials has been much minimized over the years since the introduction of radials, methinks.

So fear not for a few psi beyond the markings.

My first "A" was $25.00. Now i Can get a tire pressure gauge for $100.00 and the the psi. That is real progress.

The owners' manual states that 35 psi should be used. You do own a manual, right?
