Default Fuel gauge issue

I have a question. I have a 36 5 Window Coupe and the fuel gauge is not working. I have 6 volts at the sender. I also grounded the power wire on the top of the sender and watched the gauge to see if it moved and it did not. I'm thinking the gauge is bad. What about you?

I'd test the gauge using alligator clips, wire and a 9V batt. Pulling the speedometer makes it easier to get to.

9v is a little severe, the normal test is with a 1 1/2 volt D cell.

The 1.5v comes from the Ford recommended test procedure and should give you a 1/2 scale reading on the guage.

I guess I should have been more specific. The little 9V smoke detector batt will not hurt the gauge at all according to Lee Kelly in Idaho. .Its just a test to see if the needle moves.Lee used to do all my 6 to 12V conversions.Don't think he is no longer with us.

I’ve had to chase this problem myself. If the gauge itself is good and wiring to sending unit tests ok, then options may come down to clean (clean !) ground to tank itself or gas-logged cork or plastic float (they leak). The electro-mechanical aspects of the sending unit are pretty simple and not very prone to failure - the float itself, unless soldered brass, not so much.

Please let us know what you find

Found the problem. Sending unit is in sad shape along with the float having a couple of holes in it
