39 fan

After finnaly getting an engine in my 39 deluxe I am sorting things out. Cooling fan does not seem correct for this engine as it is barely 1/2 inch from radiator. It measures 4 1/2 inches from outside of hub to mounting flange and is 15 3/4 inches in diameter. I don't think this is a 91a fan but don't know. Does anyone know the correct dimensions of a 91a fan? Fan in question came off a 38 engine with short crank snout. Thanks, Mark

It sounds as if you have the 39 / 40 Mercury fan. At first glance it appears identical to a 39/40 Ford fan. Upon closer inspection, you'll note the distance from the mounting surface to the hub is longer on the merc.
Fortunately for you, 39/40 fans are all over the place and reasonable.

According to the 1939 t0 1948 Mercury Chassis Parts Catalogue the Mercury used the same Ford fan assembly 91A-8600 for 1939 and 1940. The 1941 Mercury fan has a longer snout and only fits the 1941 Mercury. My experience with 1939 and 1940 Fords is that the fan to radiator clearance will vary on each car by a small amount. One half inch clearance is a little tight but changing the fan will not help. You only need about 1/4 inch more clearance. I would try getting the radiator to go a little forward to get the needed clearance to replace the fan belt.

Thanks, the fan is crank mouted and radiator has little play. Fan kissed it on bottom. Per green bible fan should be 3.75 in. about 3 /4 inch shorter than the one I have. Thats why I was asking about a correct 91a fan. Mark

You might have the wrong fan. It is supposed to be 16.75 inches diameter. Can you post a photo of your fan.

This fan is 15 3/4 diameter which is another clue to it being incorrect. Sorry, can't post photo .

Here's a photo of a proper 85/95 hp '39 Deluxe / '40 (all) cooling fan.
If you had simply measured across two opposing blades, you'd come up with something near 15 3/4".
The hub to mating surface distance is in fact 3 3/4" for the Ford.

Be careful when using a parts book to determine absolute correctness. One must always remember that the parts listed are service parts that will fit and function but not necessarily be correct.
