1950 Ford Flathead V8 8BA Motor
Ran great, 123 lbs. of compression per cylinder. 30 plus lbs. oil pressure warmed up, and no smoke. Then a bolt broke on the main and took a small piece of the block with it. Selling complete assembled motor, except no intake, exhaust manifolds or dist. Will probably need a new block. Very clean, no rust or corrosion. Was a low mileage motor that ran nice until it was pulled out in June 2023. Stored inside a climate controlled garage. I can hoist motor into your pick-up truck onto your tire. Calls are best, if interested. $400.00 or offers. Call 508 362 5139 |

"The Swap Meet" is where you should post this.
Be sure to post photos of what you are selling including the block and all the engine parts. |

Blocks are the hard part to find in a deal like this. Also, who knows what else was damaged when a "piece of the block" was knocked out. I've seen a lot of blown flatheads, and usually a damaged block meant the whole engine was toast.

What does it mean exactly to “lug” an engine. Does it mean to not downshift and let the engine go into low rpm’s and accelerate slowly without downshift?

You have 98% of it. "Lugging" includes all of what you say above, while inducing an excessive LOAD on the engine by putting your foot into the throttle with gusto & enthusiasm. One more part that won't tolerate "lugging" is a healthy, aftermarket camshaft. Coop . |

Thank you for posting the consequences of "lugging" and engine. I had heard of lugging but didn't realize the potential damage to a flathead.

Lugging will break the center main on a Ford flathead what that's news to me NEVER head that before. But heck what would I know!
However from the original posters description there's no mention of lugging I read the main bearing bolt broke no doubt the bolt had a flaw thus creating the results posted. Ronnieroadster

I agree with Ronnie on this. I once broke a center main cap on one of these, and I can assure you that I was doing the farthest thing from "lugging" the engine.

Lugging and breaking a main cap?????
Old wive's tales. That is TOTALLY absurd. We used to have contests pulling a certain very steep residential route up the south side of Queen Anne Hill in Seattle. Most of the engines involved at that time were 304 ci or bigger with 280 degree cams and 4 carbs.. Any one of those engines could pull the 20 degree hills with many 90 degree turns at 300 rpm, FULL throttle in second gear at 5 mph. Two of these engines were ones that had turned over 130 at Bonneville. |

Well, one of my favorite things to do in my roadster is to go slowly into a turn in 2nd and then floor it to get the rear end sliding out and spinning the tires as I straighten out.
I certainly hope I don't find the main laying in the pan due to excessive lugging. Last edited by Tim Ayers; 09-27-2023 at 05:17 PM. |

Boy, I'd sure jump on that broken block engine if it were anywhere near me in KS.
As for lugging.....well, that's it. My engine in the '41 Merc is surely junk by now having been mistreated that way for too many miles to count. 400-600 rpm in high gear up hill after hill out in the sticks just cruising. ![]() Terry

Out of sight warranty. When out of sight down the road it's out of warranty.

Carmichael's Auto Parts in Excelsior, MN offered a "50/50" warranty. If it broke in half, you got to keep both pieces. In addition, they offered their "Return" policy. "If it's no good, bring it back and we'll give you another one just like it".
Most people never thought about what they were actually being told and left happy. |
