Burtz oil pump
If one were to use the bypass style filter that mounts on the timing gear side cover, wouldn't that act like a relief valve?

Re: Burtz oil pump
Dennis Kliesen obtained a patent for adding the pressure relief valve to his filter housing. The other housing, manufactured by someone else, does not have one. I have the Kliesen filter housing on my Burtz block and it works great. My Stipe pump puts out 50 psi but the regulator on the housing keeps the pressure right at 25 psi from idle up to 3,000 rpm. He does not have a web site but email him at [email protected].
Being able to set the pressure external to the engine is a real advantage. Before having the Kliesen filter housing, I dropped the pan a few times to set the relief valve on the oil pump. Plus, the relief valve on my oil pump did not control the pressure nearly as well as the one on the Kliesen filter housing.

Re: Burtz oil pump
I’m running a Rotoshim oil pump in mine. Built in relief valve that they can set to whatever you want.

Re: Burtz oil pump
I'm planning to use a Leonard Nettles oil pump in mine, but he's out of stock (according to the website) right now.

Re: Burtz oil pump
Nobody has gone close yet to answering the original question.
Why would you want to do that? I see NO benefit, only more wear on the drive gear on the camshaft and pump drive.

Re: Burtz oil pump
Well you said it, I didn't want to say it to sound snarky. I was just wondering the way the bypass filter is set up, wouldn't the bleed off from the block hole/port just push oil where ever the pressure is lower, i.e. the filter and dump it into the timing gear area?

Re: Burtz oil pump
I run a V8 oil pump on my Model B with an otherwise stock oiling system. The pressure is a very small amount higher because there is still the hole in the front of the oil galley that feeds the dipper tray. That's what I wanted, more oil to the tray. I turn 4600 RPM at hill climbs with no worries! No downside.

Re: Burtz oil pump
The stock oil pump on a stock motor has been working great for 90 years. If anything you can do some of the mods to a stock oil pump for a little more flow and that should be more than adequate for your motor.
There is plenty of information on how and what to do. |

Re: Burtz oil pump
An oil pump delivering high oil pressure is placing a high load on the oil pump drive gear and the center cam gear. I am concerned that this will be a failure area for anyone that accumulates lots of miles on their engine. I have been installing the Kliesen filter/regulator since they have been available and limiting the pressure to 30 - 32 psi. The extra benefit of the bi-pass is that the extra oil is sprayed directly on the timing gear.
