Default 'NEW'..Ebay trick ??

I rec'd the following from ebay: here's your invoice ($20K ), you have been approved to buy this item..pay with buy it now.
Hmm, I never exhibited interest in purchasing this item. My questions; have you ever experienced/heard of this? And, wouldn't someone (read..item owner) have had to contact ebay and submitted some form of information/claim to them I replied to ebay that I wanted an explanation of their contact with ME....so for NOTHING.

I'd like to know if the "Class Action" lawsuit check I recieved is real or a spoof. I could use the money, but wonder if it's really true?

Hey...You get one too? Last week got one for $8., and it was good according to my bank What the hay? Don't know why/what/when/where/who...but figured they might have gotten a twinge of quilt for all the lose change that they got from me!

David J,
Thanks for the tip. I'll do that!

Checked with my accountant (wife)...she corrected me as to the amount that ebay paid to me..er,ah..her! NOT $8, but $18.07 ! I told her not to spend it all in one place !

In late 2009 I started receiving notices about the lawsuit that prompted the check and also received my check this week. Depositted the check Tuesday and it must have cleared as my account has not been flagged from the bank and no mysterious things are happenning. Seems there were some fraudulaunt billing practices at e-bay and someone sued them. Somehow the lawyers made it a class action and anyone who has sold items on e-bay during a certian time frame was included. Glad someone is looking out for the rest of us, but was hoping the check would be somewhat larger. Rod

UPDATE:
David J....YOU are/were spot on with you advice ! Thanks, I learned from your advice, that ebay and paypal are 'investigating' this 'fraud' and that my alerting them is going to be "helpful in shutting down any sites connected to this email"

I also got a nice check from ebay last week for their "overcharges". Please note that the check needed to be cashed by 11/22/11, which seems like a very short time. Mine went right to the bank and I have not heard there was a problem.

I messed up on the date to cash the check. It is 12/22/11, and not 11/22/11.

I got $5.29 from the settlement. The King of Torts probably got a new Gulfstream G650.

If it doesn't quote a Prince from Nigeria, a locked up bank account in Liechtenstein, or a "friend" who lost their wallet and passport in Romania, you're probably in the clear.

I also got a huge check for $1.35. I didn't spend it in one place however! I suspect Rod is correct, that eBay was charging a little too much and lawyers with nothing else to do need to make some big money.

My check was for $0.03, thankfully the bank had enough cash on hand
so I was able to cash it. The teller said she got one for $0.11.

I got one for $14.05.I've been done with ebay for a few years. No protection that they brag about, fees including the cost of shipping,no negative feedbacks for buyers, and a dozen other things. They actually suspended me,but when they got straightened out they reinstated my account.A fellow started emailing me about shipping the Harley he had bought.I thought it was a scam and ignored it.Then I got a bunch of stuff from ebay, telling me to contact the guy or I would be suspended.I still thought it was a scam. Then I got suspended.Wasn't a scam after all,as far as I was concerned. The man actually DID bid on and win a Harley I had listed, except I hadn't listed one.He paid $12,500 to somebody for a bike, but it wasn't me.I felt bad for the guy,and cooperated with him and ebay every way I could. He was good about it with me,I talked to him a number of times.Ebay was another story.Complete idiots.Women would call from ebay, asking how I planned to resolve the situation.I would explain the deal, how the guy was scammed, and ebay was investigating it.When I was through they would ask,do you plan on refunding his money or shipping him the bike? When I finally refused to talk to them anymore, they sicced the law on me.I got a call from a man working a task force for the FBI.In less than two minutes he had grasped the whole picture. The only thing I heard from ebay after that was a notice my account was reinstated.I think I bought a couple of little things after that just to make sure I could still use it.

Did ebay notify you through your "my ebay" ? I think if it's not in "my ebay" it's not from ebay.

Well, so far I got the biggest check at 14.54$. I didn't even know I was part of this and was leery of the check but I guess Monday I'll go to the bank.
