Starter problems
I installed a Power Master starter in my 40 standard and am using the stock starter button running thru a relay then down to the starter. From time to time it leaves me stranded. Push the button and the relay just clicks and doesn't engage the starter. Installed a new relay same thing. I'm wondering if I shouldn't rewire with a different button and bypass the relay and shoot the power direct to the starter? I've used a lot of Power Master starters and have never had a problem but they were all wired direct. First time with an early button. Really hate to lose the stock button.

Re: Starter problems
Some assumptions here, the starter button is providing a ground to the relay, correct? No reason I can see why this arrangement wouldn't work. Which relay are you using? This is one I have used.

Re: Starter problems
You are correct. It's an after market relay almost looks like a horn relay, may not be heavy enough? And everything works fine when its cold. The relay is located behind the kick panel inside the car.

Re: Starter problems
No mines flat as I said it looks more like a horn relay. May not be heavy enough? Source for one like in the picture.

Re: Starter problems
The relay that Jseery shows is the correct relay alright but most folks called it the starter solenoid, which it is not. It’s a relay. Get a new on from C&G. 800 2266 0470.
They list it as a Starter Solenoid. Steel case, Ford script. $24.95. They also list later ones that work off key start ignition switches, etc. they even list ones with the button on the end. |

Re: Starter problems
I'm now wondering if it's not a starter problem? I've used dozens of Power Master starters and never had a problem. I would think if you can hear the relay clicking it is engaging but the starter solenoid is not engaging. The fact that last night I had to sit for 15 minutes trying to start the car every few minutes and finally it starts makes me question the starter. And of course it's just out of warranty.

Re: Starter problems
We are dealing with a 12v system here, does C & G sell 12v starter solenoids of this style? When not dealing with NOS type parts I much prefer to do my own research and buy parts directly from a supplier of the part(s) I am after. It is ok to purchase parts for the early Ford parts houses, but not my preference. I want to know what I am getting, who manufactured it, etc. and that it meets my requirements, not some Ford parts suppliers. But that is just me.

Re: Starter problems
New 12 volt starter relays are always looking for power to actuate, the old original starter relays were looking for a ground. So when I converted over to 12 volts, I always used the original relay. The only bad part about having a ground seeking relay is that the starter button is always hot so if you bump it and the car is in gear, the car leaps. Another thing that I liked about original relays also is that there is a button on the bottom of the relay that you can bump when you want to turn the engine over or start from outside the car. Those original relay are very heavy duty and American made.

Re: Starter problems
I guess that I should add that if you bypass the relay by either using a jumper cable or hooking a cable from the batt. to the starter, that should tell you which one is bad.

Re: Starter problems
The fact that you have tried two new relays and they both clicked then my guess is your starter motor has an intermittent fault. Next time it does it using a test light on the starter terminal to see if power is getting on the starter. No use guessing all the time but do some actual testing, Regards, Kevin.

Re: Starter problems
Need to take a look at the starter solenoid I recommend, your comment is not correct. The 24060 is ground activated, just like the original 6v were.

Re: Starter problems
It's tough to check the starter when your 20 miles from home at a restaurant. Never does it in the garage.

Re: Starter problems
Since it only happens when hot maybe you could jump the wires on the starter and add in a relay like JSeery posted as a "hot start relay" (like people do with Chevy starters).

Re: Starter problems
Carry a test light with you or you could give the starter motor a little TAP, TAP with your wheel brace or something while trying to crank it. Thats an old mechanics trick. Good luck, Regards, Kevin.
