Virgil, That is a great idea. How long is it - top to bottom total?

Ross I like that one might just have to copy it. People will be asking "What is that for? I'll tell em it makes it go faster heh heh he"

Be sure to put a flat washer behind it to clear the timing cover and the rest of the WP. It wouldn't hurt to extend the round bar a little further (1/2") toward the block, too.

I fought my belts for near an hour last night, first problem was the alternator bracket cocking in the intake nose. But then I fought the fan, because that square washer on the big post was slightly cocked. So I started over and did something I've said I'd do, every time I fought that washer. I welded across it, then ground it to the width of the groove in the bracket. Now it can't get cocked. (I did more grinding after these pics, but I clearly wasn't after "good looks")

Ross F-1,

I totally understand! I just went through the same thing over this past weekend. I took my generator off to replace the brushes. When I went to put everything back together, I had the same problem with the square washer.

I tried to keep it straight, but when your prying up in the generator with a bar, and using a wrench to tighten the gen bracket down, it's hard to keep the washer straight.

I thought I had it straight until I tried to pull the slack out of the fan belt the fan was hanging up. I ended up taking a cresent wrench and straightening up the square washer then the fan was easy to pull up.

I love my old 47, but the fan/generator combo wasn't one of Ford's better idea's in my opinion.

Hi Vergil,
I couldn't open your pics. I know, it's probably me, "user error." But since this is an old thread, and maybe the pics have been deleted, would you please try posting again?

Here's how I do it: I use s screw type valve spring compressor, the type that has a slight curve to it and place it under the generator. Then I raise the the gen, tighten it, then pry up the fan with a small bar.

WOW.... some of you guys really crank on your belts.... with my stock ford style water pumps I keep them as loose as possible. I have an 8ba that a fan has been attached to the genny. all driven off one belt. I keep it so loose that the belt is flopping all over the place at idle. my ole man who put it together originally keeps telling me to tighten it... I keep telling him if it doesnt slip it doesn't need to be tightened. keeps those old pumps from wearing out! they are currently 25 years young. plenty tight just by lifting the genny by hand.

Since this is about tightening fan belts. Does anyone have a trick for tightening the belts on a G series 6 cylinder? The generator tightens two different belts at two different angles. I don't have a pic on my phone to show what it looks like. And the bolts are a pain to get to while you try to hold the generator against belts.

The picture shows how to adjust the belt. I usually adjust them
for 3/4" total movement. G.M.

I did adjust the belts on the "POLISH TANK" engine you
posted. The straight length is shorter and went with 1/2".

Guys, Vergil hasn't been on here since last October, according to his page. Hopefully, he went to "Facebook", "Instragram" or some such. Anybody have any better information?

Two photos copied and pasted from:

...Terry
ps. further down that page/post is a tool made by Roseville Carl that looks like it would be worth the extra work to build it.
