Self Canceling Turn Signals
My 40 pickup has the original type steering column. I have a universal turn signal switch that has no more brains than I do when it comes to remembering to turn itself off. Friends riding behind me constantly complain that my signals are always on.
My new 40 Sedan Delivery has a pretty interesting setup. It's made by an outfit named Electro-Tech. It works on 6 or 12 volts. The way it works is that it has a timer that is pre-set for 15 seconds. Once activated, the timer starts. What's different about this setup is that stepping on the brake pauses the timer and keeps the lights flashing. When you take your foot off the brake, the timer resumes. It also uses an electronic timer to blink the lights rather than a flasher. So it doesn't care whether you have incandescents or LEDs at the other end of the wire. It's a bit pricey. But it works. My friends are taking up a collection to buy me one for the pickup. |

Re: Self Canceling Turn Signals
I took a different approach and got a modified flasher unit with a sound transducer from these folks: http://www.turnalarm.com/ It works well and made such a loud beep as originally delivered that I had to wrap it in foam rubber to tone it down. Been doing it so long now that it's almost an automatic reflex to cancel the signal after a turn.

JERSEY JIM - Thanks for the tip. I have one of those cheapy $15 turn signal units, and have the same problem as you did. This looks like a quality unit. To me, worth the price. http://www.turnswitch.com/Turnsignal.htm

http://www.turnswitch.com/ That looks like a nice unit! I got a different one that is all hidden except a micro switch, has a loud alarm and was planning on wrapping it too. Wish I had found this one! |

Re: Self Canceling Turn Signals
Here is my self canceling turn signal setup. It was working fine until I recently had rotator cuff surgery on my left shoulder. Right and left turns still cancel ok but I have been having a problem getting the stop signal to turn off, hurts like hell.

Re: Self Canceling Turn Signals
I took a different approach.
When I installed the 56 Ford pickup steering, I used the whole column. It has built in self cancelling turn sigs. I never used the hand throttle and don't need the spark lever with the mag. |

Re: Self Canceling Turn Signals
J C Whitney had (Maybe still has) a louder flasher. Not obnoxious, but louder.

Re: Self Canceling Turn Signals
I have a 6 volt beeper type from "Turnalarm". Works great to remind you directionals are left on.

Re: Self Canceling Turn Signals
In the Tyler Model A club,we have those who insist on directional signals on their Model A's but they are too senile to remember to turn them off.It seems to me that presence of mind is important if you are to drive. The oncoming driver doesn't know what their intentions are.Turn or not?The old cars would be much safer without turn signals than with.

Re: Self Canceling Turn Signals
I had this same problem and just wired a couple of $3.00 buzzers from Radio Shack into my two turn signal circuits to remind me. Here they are: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...stuff-you-want
