Default Just what is a touring cam

I keep hearing "Touring Cam" but no one can tell me just what is a Touring cam. Other then different specs what does this cam do in real life. How does it affect idle and acceleration from idle. Why do I need one. If I am not touring but puttering around town wouldn't a stock cam be better.

Ford introduced an number of improvements he discovered with the A engine run on the model B engine. The B cam has a higher lift and duration changes that improved performance. This cam profile provides the base that other machinists have profiled to design a 'touring cam' nice A idle with improved performance even over the B profile.Dont care about performance? dont blame you, hopping up A engines is an expensive proposition.

There were 3 different profiles put on B cams by Ford. The most common has .305" of cam-lift. The latest one (I think the latest) had .339" cam lift. All idled nicely, the .339 cam had more mid and higher speed power than the earlier one. A touring cam can be anything, but generally have more lift and more duration (more time with the valve off its seat) than the stock cam. Too much duration can actually hurt low-speed performance. So to answer your question, sounds like a stock A or B cam would be best for you. The combination of parts must work together as a team to produce the power you want. Cam, compression and carburetor size determine that. Racers, hill-climbers, etc. use a "hotter" cam, higher compression and a bigger or multiple carbs, with some sacrifice of power at low speeds but much more at mid and high speeds. 100 horsepower is easily attainable on a Model A engine.

A touring cam is what you tell everybody you have when you have the fastest model A in high school, and you are really running a 404A.

Hee hee. It is the cam that was in the engine that won the Antique Nationals several years ago. (Top fuel 4 banger)

I ran a 404A once but had better luck with a 425 eliminator. I do think that the 404A is a good cam even so. This was 1/4 mile drags slingshot, maybe the 404A is better for roundy round IDK.

This is all well and good, but it doesn't answer the question, "What is a touring cam?" I have one in my Town Sedan and am also curious as to what it is. So what is a touring cam?

i have a ''B'' cam in my 29, it runs good. i wanted a B cam for another A i was building, called HARVEY CRANE [CRANE CAMS] to see if he could regrind an A cam to B specs,Harvey went into a long spiel about why an A cam could NOT be ground to B specs. said there was a man in michigan who was advertising he could do it, said they almost went to blows over it. Harvey said that the ford cam new at factory was .302 lift, after it is run a while that it will wear to .288 lift and stay there. he said that he had a touring grind he called a CRANE .302, a NASCAR cam grinder in NC near ashville has the specs and will regrind your cam. he reground mine and was doing 5 others at the time, don't remember his name but should be easy to find. OH! i miked my cam befor i sent it to him and it was exactly .288, HARVEY was amasing what he knew about model A's.had a 4 page list of different A cams and specs, i had an ENGLE #4 that he wanted me to bring to him so he could degree it and add to list, mever got it to him....RIP HARVEY the cam runs good around town, havent been on trip yet. eng.. snyder head, winfield intake w/ford flt head 6 cylnd 1 barell carb, mdl B dist, 60 over, 302 cam, balanced crank, bal eng, 35 lb fly wh.,v-8 clt. & pres plt, borg wrner OD. 4.11 rear ratio, 21'' whls

Harvey was a great guy, very intelligent but would tell you how to make a watch when you asked what time it was. IMO, the engine doesn't know what cam is in it, but will respond to whatever the cam grind is, and the B cam out-performs the A every time.

Should a different cam be run with an OHV conversion?

Yes. Most of the time there is a positive rocker ratio to deal with.

So where can I find out what would be the best cam to use with a Riley Two Port?

Riley's are an F-head engine, OHV intakes and flathead exhausts, so should have a dual-pattern cam. What's best in your case may not be good for the next guy/engine, depending on what kind of driving you will be doing.

His question is; WHAT is a touring cam, not what cam to get.
