My concerns here are that fuel can still go down the tube. Now you have moved the filter so it is directly under the carb (filled with fuel) and directly under the fuel line.
Granted you have a little shield, but I can tell you the flames from this paper filter, even with the hood closed, was 2-3 feet in the air.
The owner was able to get the filter off, the inside was still burning.
I don't really agree that moving this under the carb is the safe way.
I am concerned that this may be a problem.

This is a prime example that air filters on an updraft carburetoir causes more problems than it could ever solve!! Model A's were not designed to run an air filter and probably a million of them have survived for over eighty years without one. Not only are paper filters a fire hazard, any filter restricts air flow , power and causes unburned fuel to enter the crankcase and dilute the oil in the process. Even the Air Maze filter with wire mesh restricts air flow. Several years ago, because of peer pressure, I tried running a mesh filter. With the air maze mesh filter, my spark plugs were black and sooty, the engine ran rich and didn't have full power. Any of the filters causes carburetor noise. Just the oipposite of what some claim , updraft carburetors run quieter with no filter.

agree purdy i would never run one either and when one comes in to get worked on it leaves the shop in the back seat..
definetly alters the air/fuel ratio

I too have seen a Model A catch fire because of gas building up in an Air Maze. They're worthless to me. A club member once told me, "A Model A with an Air Maze is like running a mile and trying to breath with a rag in your mouth."

In my experience, driving on today's roads at today's speeds, you will knock the babbit out by fatigue long before cylinder wear from dust will cause you a problem.

None of us drive that much that it makes much of a difference most likely, but I had an Air Maze. Based on this thread, I bought one of the Hi Boys and installed it. Now I have peace of mind AND the car runs a lot better with the K&N filter. While we may never see the results of running without an air filter, I don't think I would run without one.
