Default 46 ford rear drum cutting

Is it possible to cut the drum and hub together rather than removing the drum from the hub. I checked one shop with a brake lathe and he didn`t have anyway to center up the hub. The drums I have use studs pressed in from the back side. Hub has the round plate.

If you can find someone that has the correct equipment. Because these type of drum/hubs have not been around much sense the 40s - 50s, it will be hard to locate one.

You always turn those drums as a drum/hub UNIT....DO NOT separate! Now, most shops today do not have the arbor required to hold that hub. Many times, shops that do VW drums have the needed tool. Look around for an old shop, especially with old guys doin' the wrenching. They are STILL out there. You might even try shops that do big trucks. Whatever you do, do NOT let someone talk you into separating the drum and hub. DD

The Barrett brake lathe has adapters that fit in the wheel bearing without removing the seal, and a small cone for the outer

X2. Look for the older gentleman with grease stained overalls at the oldest machine shop in your area. Tell him what you got. He'll either know right away or tell you he got rid of that brake lathe arbor years ago.

Most machinist don't throw away anything, so your chances are good.

Is there anyway the hub could be "chucked up" in a big lathe and slowly "turned"?

use a stub axle and cut on lathe. old brake drum machines had a very small arbor to do this combo and not too many of them around

.

Depending on what brand of brake lathe the shop has, the arbor for Ford rear hubs may look something like this set-up. It's that small (11/16") outer opening in the hub that is hard to match today. DD

They have to be turned together. Unless you are in the witness protection program add your general location to your profile and maybe someone will suggest a place near to you that can do the work.

If the place has an Ammco brake lathe; they may have the small OD arbor laying on a shelf and not know that is what they need for rear drums.

Here is a picture of the regular and small OD arbors.

It is truly wonderful that several Fordbarners have offered to turn your drums.

Well done folks.

on the top of the drum doktor are the rear drum adapters, one that fits in the wheel bearing, and the small cone for the outside. ---a drum doktor cuts different than most brake lathes instead of a steady feed that makes a spiral cut it cuts a full turn then moves over with a ratchet mechanism

For arcing shoes with fixed anchors the barrett brake doktor arcs and centers the shoes on the backing plate.

For full floating like bendix the aamco arcing machine works better , though the brake doktor has adapters to do bendix too
