Re: Rear hub "keepers"
I think this is what you are seeking. They hold the hub ('39-'48), to the backing plate in case of an axle break. If so, just about any speed shop will have them. Speedway would be a good start.

Re: Rear hub "keepers"
There often called safety hubs, as they were required for racing in the flathead era. If you want quality USA ones I would contact Vern Tardel.

Re: Rear hub "keepers"
You can buy the old style safety hubs like Ken has here:
http://www.reds-vintage-parts.com/ou...-new-old-stock and http://www.reds-vintage-parts.com/ou...-new-old-stock Or, if you have some 1/8 inch steel, a vise, a saw a drill and a welder you can make your own. If you decide to make your own notice how the top (1/4 in. thick) surface has a curved contour for clearance on a 15 in. rim. 16 in. wouldn't need the contour. Use thin plywood to make your protypes. Interesting, something else that I didn't know I might need.

Re: Rear hub "keepers"
Those retainers only work on car drums. I have pickup brakes and drums on my diff, and the drums don't have the right shape lip.

Re: Rear hub "keepers"
Bassman; Just curious to know what your drums look like. Are they like the 1939 Lincoln drums? Can you post a photo of your drum's configuration?

Re: Rear hub "keepers"
They're very similar to the car ones, but the vertical lip that the retainer sits over is not vertical, it's on enough of an angle on the outside edge that the retainer will neither fit nor have any grip if the axle breaks.

Re: Rear hub "keepers"
Wonder if you could make a set of retainers that compensated for that non-vertical mounting surface?
