Westach 6 volt tachometer
Just installed a 6 volt positive ground tachometer in my 1948 Ford convertible. The car has Columbia 2 speed axle. The tach works beautiful and at 3000 rpm at runs 50 mph with 4:11 axle ratio.I then shift to overdrive and car turns 2100 rpm at 50 mph.Wow what difference.Would highly recommend the Westach tachometer a high quality unit and easy to install.

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
Dave, Westach is a great company and have been in business since the 70's. Glen Westberg and his brother sold the company to one of their main guys a few years ago and it's nice to know the company is still maintaining the same quality in their products. Glen was a personal friend and has since passed away.

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
Dave, I bought a Westach positive ground tachometer a couple years ago to use in my 35 fordor sedan. I haven't installed it yet, but it's good news to hear yours is working well and that you're happy with it.

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
Installed on the column. Did not have to drill any holes. Very pleased with the appearance.

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
I have always wondered if the installation of a tachometer into the ignition has any effect on the ignition system. What say ye "electrical geeks?"

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
Under normal conditions, there is no effect. The tachometer just reads the signal from the tach and imposes a negligible load. I did have a situation where a tachometer controller developed a short and shut down the ignition system by grounding out the coil. It was a failure of the module and when the controller was unhooked, the engine ran normally.

I have been using the Westach 6 volt tach for about 7 years, works great.
Has anyone hooked up their optional light? |

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
6V pos ground in a 1948 Dodge Power Wagon. I did connect the bulb. More accurate than my speedometer. Especially since the tac reading is 1/2 the speed in 4th gear, ie 2500RPM = 50mph

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
I purchased one for my ‘51 F1 but while I waited for it to be built I found a “football tach” on eBay for $20.00 and now I can’t get myself to remove the football tach for the westach... so the westach sits in its box on a shelf.

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
It just refers to the football shape on the face of the gauge.

Re: Westach 6 volt tachometer
Bosch currently makes a Tachometer that is very close in looks to the original Sun "Football". It is a regular 12 volt negative ground "Motor" tach. The main difference is that it has a 0-8000 RPM range.
I can tell you how to make one run on 6 volts positive ground. |
