restarting after shut down
I have a 47 stock engine which after shut down 1/2 hour or so has to turn over
8 or 10 times before starting. New coil, new condenser, plugs, wires, starter, new dizzy. I have a electric fuel pump installed that works. When it starts it idles well and runs good with no hesitation. What am I missing ? |

Re: restarting after shut down
Well, the normal place to start is checking for good grounds and the proper sized battery cables.

Re: restarting after shut down
I've tried pushing the button, turning on the electric fuel pump, a pump of the gas pedal, choking it, but nothing seems to make a different.

Flatheads don't just fire on the first crank every time depending on time between. |

Re: restarting after shut down
High fuel pump pressure, leaking float needle valve, leaking power valve. Thats what it
sounds like. As said as far as grounding if all is good it should spin over like its got 12 volts. If not , wimpy cables & ground, starter dragging that alone sucks the juice from the coil. But it is turning 8-10 times? Still say carb. is flooding - common. And then I have several F800 F900 trucks that use 4 barrel Holly carbs. Now adays with this junk gas, power valves flood & leak like cheese cloth. We now replaced those with Edlelbrocks what a difference they are junk gas compatible.. |

Re: restarting after shut down
Just as a test to see if it is overrich, the next time you restart hot try no choke, no extra fuel pump, a slow press of the pedal to about half throttle, and crank without pumping. If extra fuel has dribbled into the manifold then holding the pedal partially open will get some air through it and help get a fireable mixture in there. It is a slow depression of the pedal to avoid (as much as is possible) squirting even more juice down there.
